CHS section subject to direct compression

Calculations in accordance with BS5950:Part1 and the SCI 'Steelwork Design Guide to BS5950'

Section size - 193.7x10.0 CHS

Section class - 1 (Plastic)
Steel grade - S 355
Design strength of steel = 355 N/mm2

Length = 2000 mm

Applied ultimate compressive load = 150 kN

End restraint type: (As defined in Table 24)

Bottom, x-x axis - Effectively held in position and restrained in direction.

Top, x-x axis - Effectively held in position and restrained in direction.

Bottom, y-y axis - Effectively held in position and restrained in direction.

Top, y-y axis - Effectively held in position and restrained in direction.

Determine the member slenderness

The effective length factor for the x-x axis combination of restraints is
L = 0.7
fx
and for the y-y axis is
L = 0.7
fy

For the x-x axis the slenderness is

 = L *L /r
x o fx xx
= 2000*0.7/65
= 21.5
and for the y-y axis
 = L *L /r
y o fy yy
= 2000*0.7/65
= 21.5

Slenderness not more than 180, no restriction on use.

Determine the capacity of the section

The maximum slenderness of the section is 21.5 and the allowable steel compressive strength from Table 27(a) is
p = 350 N/mm2
c

and hence the compressive capacity of the section

P = p *A /1000
c c g
= 350*5770/1000
= 2019.5 kN
Section OK
