Problem Set Part I. Stresses and Strains (submission is on February 5, 2018 before 5 pm)

1. A force P was applied at end A if string AB (see Fig. 2B) resulting to a normal strain of 0.009
mm/mm on the string. Point A translates to the left by 15 mm. Simultaneously, Plate G is heated
causing a shear strain at Point E on the plate equal to 8x10-3 radians.
a. If member BCD is rigid, find the resulting NORMAL STRAIN on member DE.
b. If member BCD is rigid and there is a 0.5 mm clearance at connection E, find the resulting
NORMAL STRAIN on member DE.

2. The counter-clockwise moment M applied to the rigid L-bar B produces an axial strain of -
0.004444 mm/mm in bar A and a shearing strain of 0.007 radians at E. Determine the axial strain
in bar C if there is a 0.5 mm clearance in the connection between the triangular plate and the rigid
L-bar D.
3. A load P is applied on point A of the rigid vertical bar AG of a steel structure shown. Determine the maximum
allowable P if an overall factor of safety of 2.25 is desired. The ultimate normal stress for the horizontal
links are 140 MPa (Tension) and 100MPa (Compression), while the ultimate shearing stress for all
connections is 100 MPa. The rectangular plate FE is glued at surface a-b, the glue has an ultimate strength
of 5 MPa. The pins at E and B are 8mm in diameter while the pins at C and D are 10mm in diameter, note
that all connections are not reinforced around the pin holes. (dimensions in the figure is given in
millimeters)

4. At the proportional limit, a 200‐mm gage length of a 15‐mm diameter alloy bar has elongated
0.90 mm when a 58.4 kN axial load was applied. At a load of 70 kN the same material ruptures
with a total elongation of 2.0 mm. Determine the following properties of this material: [Assume
the plastic region being linear]
a. The proportional limit.
b. The modulus of elasticity.
c. Modulus of resilience
d. Approximate modulus of toughness.
e. Assuming the material is initially unloaded. Determine the permanent deformation
acquired by the material if a load equivalent to 40 kN is applied then unloaded.
f. Assuming the material is initially unloaded. Determine the permanent deformation
acquired by the material if a load equivalent to 60 kN is applied then unloaded.
5. An 800 x 800 x 400 mm block is subjected to a 64,000-kN compressive load in the x-
direction and a 16,000-kN compressive load in the z direction. If the block is
restrained to expand in the y-direction, determine the new dimensions of the block.
Assume that the load is distributed over the area. E=200,000 MPa ν=0.3.
