The core expertise of the Global Business Unit Water Treatment
lies in the efficient reprocessing of wastewater. Through the
products and services of the traditional brands PASSAVANT®,
JOHNSON SCREENS®, NOGGERATH® and GEIGER®, the Global
Business Unit Water Treatment is able to provide system
solutions, with components and machines manufactured within
the group, for the clarification of municipal and industrial waste-
water, biological treatment, sludge treatment and drinking water
purification and to increase the overall efficiency of wastewater
treatment plants.
In the pre-clarification stage, sewage sludge accrues when
organic substances are degraded. This has to be purified, recycled
or disposed of. The demand for efficient and sustainable concepts
for sludge treatment is increasing as there are currently no
competent standard procedures for further processing, an unre-
stricted disposal of sludge is no longer possible at every location,
and the pollution levels of the “fertilizer” are posing a cause for
environmental concern.
Regardless of subsequent disposal methods, it is advisable, from
an economic point of view, to prepare the sludge for downstream
processes. In separation processes solid matter is removed from
the water phase and the volume and mass of the sludge are
thus reduced. The effectiveness of the separation process has a
decisive influence on the volume of sludge to be transported and
disposed of.

Sewage sludge is continuously produced in the course of wastewater clarification pro-

cesses and is either utilized in further processing or disposed of. A rapid concentration
of the solid matter and a reduction of the sludge volume form the basis for the efficient
treatment and disposal of wastewater sludge in downstream processes.

Dewatering is one of the most important processes in the entire water treatment
procedure. As the burning of sewage sludge, or its disposal at a landfill site,
both involve costs, sludge dewatering pays off, particularly when several tons
accrue each day.
