DO THIS NOW

Below is a series of images of the tools from both Photoshop and Final Cut Pro. Name them.
Production and Post Production
SKILLS DEVELOPMENT SECTION 1A
TASK 1
§ Production at AS consisted of taking photos for the prelim school magazine and making your final
music magazine and writing an article for a double page spread.
§ Post Production at AS consisted of editing the timelines and putting all the text and graphics and sound
together in Final Cut Pro / editing the photographs in Photoshop.

NOW DO THIS
Using the space below, brainstorm everything you did for your main product at AS at the stage of post-
production.

This must be detailed in terms of tools used, the software pros /cons, your strengths /weaknesses.

TASK 2
§ Production at A2 consisted of filming the music video. It also consisted of things like taking photos,
designing your posters and the digi-pak.
§ Post Production at A2 consisted of editing the footage and audio in iMovie/Sony Vegas/Final Cut. It also
included manipulating the photographs and putting all the text and graphics together on Photoshop.

NOW DO THIS
Using the space below, brainstorm everything you did for your main product at A2 at the stage of post-
production. This must be detailed in terms of tools used, the software pros /cons, your strengths
/weaknesses.

You should also detail your progression of film editing and Photoshop skills at stage of post production
between AS and your A2 ancillary tasks.

TASK 3 – Progression and creativity
“A process needed for problem solving...not just a special gift enjoyed by a few but a common ability
enjoyed by most people.” (Jones 1993)

NOW DO THIS
Try to think about how you have become more technically competent in terms of your use of digital
technology to present work creatively at the stage of post- production.

All of your work should make reference to your knowledge of the KEY MEDIA CONCEPTS.
§ Media Language
§ Representation
§ Audiences
§ Institutions

So if you were to state that you used a PremierPro clean transition you need to explain why you did this in
terms of communication/meaning/mode of address for the audience.

E.g. “At the stage of post-production, despite there being more advanced transitions effects available in
the video effects bin on PremierPro, we used simple clean transitions where no effects were used. I used
simple transitions when matching the beat to the action on screen, that would amplify a lyric in the
narrative for the audience. I found the most effective amplification was when a close up was used of X
singing a specific lyric, e.g. ? The close up connotes that X is important, giving more information about X,
enhancing the representation of X. It is also convention of the music video to highlight the lead singer,
(Sven E Carlson) .”

NOW DO THIS

Using the space below, link 6 post production choices you made to one or more of the key media concepts.
1a questions ALWAYS require you to explain WHAT you did, HOW you did it and crucially WHY you did
something. The examiner is looking for students to demonstrate an understanding of not only HOW you
improved but WHY you improved.

In its most simplistic form, the reason for improvement is due to repetition - invariably the more we do
something the more proficient we become at it. At the highest level however an understanding of when to
do something is more important.

It is helpful to consider your skills development as moving through the following stages

DATA - INFORMATION - KNOWLEDGE - WISDOM

Post production refers to everything you do to a product once you have completed filming/photography.
Lets apply this to your AS and A2 work

DATA - this refers to EVERYTHING that a piece of post production software can do. When you began the
course you were given software which contained a plethora of tools but you were either unaware of what
they were capable of or how to use them in the production of your magazine or video

INFORMATION - this stage is when you learnt what each post production tool could do. For example you
learnt what every icon on the left side of Photoshop could do and could begin making simple adjustments
to an image or adding layers. At this stage you wouldn't appreciate layout conventions or
editing requirements so any adjustments wouldn't dramatically improve your work or you would make
adjustments which whilst technically skilful (selecting an area, such as the lips, an altering its colour) added
little to the products appeal.

KNOWLEDGE - this stage is when you discovered which tool to use for which job. Where previously you
may have laboriously cut out using the magnetic lasso, with knowledge you understood that you could
speed up the process by first using the magic wand (and altering its tolerance) before making 'fine'
adjustments using the lasso. Likewise with your video, the addition on a simple 'wash' or 'effect' (ken burns
or bulb flash) on certain key shots would make your product appear 'real'

WISDOM - this stage is when you understand the conventions of your genre and therefor make only the
minimal amount of adjustments. For your music video simple cuts to create pace and rhythm rather than
excessive use of effects would begin to dominate your work. For print work you may have made
adjustments in other software (say instagram) before moving it into Photoshop or in the case of your
DigiPac made no adjustments to the image at all but relied solely on text to make it appear like a genuine
product.

TASK

Below are a choice of THREE exam questions. Remember they start with a statement for you to ultimately
answer as part of your evaluation.

§ “A media product is primarily created a the stage of editing”. In your own experience detail how far the
meaning of your product was constructed at the stage of post production.
§ “Creativity is something that is inherent and cannot be learned”. In your experience detail how the post
production of your media products developed your creative skills.
§ “Consumers are now media producers”. In your experience detail how far the post production of your
work was enabled by the digital technology available to you.
To prepare to write a response to one of these questions (you can choose which)

STAGE 1

Find examples for as many of the post production elements as possible. You can again use the existing
screen grabs from your narrative/representation work (or you could select different scenes should you
wish) though it may make sense to restrict yourself to just one scene/shot. You will also need to find
examples from your AS prelim AS Magazine A2 prelim and digipac and poster
Post production elements:

sound
CGI effects
video commentary
feedback - roughcut
transitions/effects
subtitles
marketing (digi-pack)
editing
consumption/exchange
photoshop editing (colour balance, magnetic lasso, magic wand, rectangular marquee etc)

Here is the essay structure you should follow

PARAGRAPH 1 should be an introduction which explains which projects you did. It can be quite short. It
also needs to directly respond to the statement.
PARAGRAPH 2 should pick up the skill area and perhaps suggest something about your starting point
with it- what skills did you have already and how were these illustrated. use an example.
PARAGRAPH 3 should talk through your use of that skill in early projects and what you learned and
developed through these. Again there should be examples to support all that you say.
PARAGRAPH 4 should go on to demonstrate how the skill developed in later projects, again backed by
examples, and reflecting back on how this represents moves forward for you from your early position.
PARAGRAPH 5 short reflection summarising how and why you progressed

ESSAY RESPONSE – 30 MINUTES
