CHECKING TRANSMISSION ( GU BBU SOLUTION)

Address 1 Address Address

To illustrate how we can check if transmission is ok or not I will take an example

of site DXB 2968. The IP plan is given in the table above.

From the given IP plan we can see that we have three channels.

I. OM channel for the site to be visible in the M2000 for operation and
maintenance purposes
II. 2G traffic channel for carrying 2G voice and data traffic
III. 3 G traffic channel for carrying 3G voice and data traffic

In each of the traffic and OM channel we have two columns of IP. One is the
physical IP address and the other is the gateway IP address. We also have a
column for vlan of each channel.

We also have the numbers /26 for traffic channel and /27 for OM channel given in
the table. These are the number of ones in the subnet masks of those channels.
When converted to decimal /26 is 255.255.255.192 and /27 is 255.255.255.224.

In testing transmission we have to test all of the three channels. To test

transmission we use the ping tool, thus you should have the ping tool folder in
your computer

 Testing the OM channel
Step 1:
Setting your computer into the physical IP address of the channel to be
tested

To start our test for any channel we have to set our computer so that it has
the physical IP address of the channel we want to test.
The following is the step by step illustration on how to do it.
Click on the Local Area Network icon from the quick launch to get a
window as shown in the screen shot below

Then Click on Open Network and Sharing Center you will get the
window below

Click on local area connection

Click on properties

Click on Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)

Click on use the following IP address then type in the physical IP of
the channel you wish to test

Suppose we want to test transmission for OM channel of our

example site, we type in or paste the IP 10.235.88.83 since it is the
physical IP of OM channel given in the IP plan sheet. The mask is 27
as given in the IP plan sheet thus subnet mask is 255.255.255.224

Then click OK then OK the close to close all of the small windows.

Step 2:

Opening the ping tool, setting the source IP, Destination IP and Vlan
in the ping tool

Open the ping tool folder and double click on PingToolsv1.8 file as
shown in the first screen shot of the ping tool on the second page of
this document

Choose the Network controller card to which you have connected
your Ethernet cable. My Network controller card to is Realtek PCIe
GBE Family Controller. Once you select the right one your computer
ip which you set previously will appear automatically in the source IP
field as shown in the screenshot below.
Type in the vlan field as given in the IP sheet, since we are testing
OMCH its Vlan is 970 as given in the IP table above.
Further you need to type in the destination field the destination IP. In
this case our destination IP is the gateway IP for OM which is
10.235.88.65

Step 3

Click on send button to start the ping test.

Usually the ping tool doesn’t work well the first time click on stop
and then click send the second time.
Then observe the results.
The number of packets sent and the number of packets received
should be equal and not otherwise.
You should also get the message that the ping result is normal
Only when the number of packets sent is equal to the number of
packets received and you get the message ping result is normal then
you can conclude that the transmission is ok.

 Repeat the same procedure for 2G traffic channel and 3G
traffic channel.

 If all channels, the OM channel, the 2G traffic channel and 3G

traffic channel can ping their corresponding gateways then we
can conclude transmission is ok.
