Why I Wanted To Do It

The reason I wanted to do this particular experiment is because I have burnt myself

a couple times with hot water on the stove and believe me it hurt. Then one day though I

saw one of my parents putting salt in the water before it came to a boil. So I wondered about

it and now this year I was able to find out what happened when you put salt in water. The

only difference was that I used multiple salts. I hypothesized that, How Do different types of

salt affect the speed at which water boils at?

Temperature?

Does salt actually change the temperature water boils at? Yes it does, when a cook or

chef puts salt in boiling water it raises the heat. This heat is known as the boiling point, it is

the point at which water boils. The boiling point happens when a non volatile solute is added

to a pure solvent. Now when the salt is added the boiling point goes from 212 degrees

fahrenheit and raises it 35.6 degrees fahrenheit. There is one catch to this though when you

add salt to water it will actually boil slower than regular water. So then what happens is that

you actually have more water evaporate than water boiling (Hutchinson, Sean). For the

record salt is made of a metal and non metal compound, like sodium chloride and copper

sulfate(Chris Oxlade p.48)

Dissolving Into Something?

What does it mean for a substance to dissolve in another substance? The actual

definition of dissolve is that a solute passes through a solution. This typically means that a

solid is going into a liquid phase. The solvent can be a pure substance or a mixture. When

something dissolves into another thing it spreads out through it.So this means when it is

dissolving it spreads to cover the entire area it is spreading through. The way to think of it is

like people in a room who don't like each other so they spread out in the

room(Helmenstine,Anne).

Size Of Material Dissolving?

Does the size of a solid affect how it will dissolve in a liquid? Yes it does because all

its particles have to spread out. Like ground sugar will dissolve faster than a cube of sugar

due to surface area. However in my case we are dealing with salt so it will actually dissolve

faster because of its surface area. Now you can actually make your solid that is being

dissolved even faster by dissolving it in hot water. Also stirring the liquid and the solid that

is dissolving in the liquid can also speed up the process at which the solid is dissolving.

Altitude?

How does altitude affect water boiling?First off altitude means the height above sea

level incase you didn’t know that. Now altitude does make water boil faster. The reason for

this is because of something called atmospheric pressure. Atmospheric pressure really just

means pressure in the atmosphere. Now what it does to boiling water is that as you get

higher it takes less heat to boil water than in lower areas such as California. The reason this

is possible is because the air is less dense.(Drew Desilver) Finally the reason atmospheric

pressure makes such an effect is because what makes the water boil is when vapor meets the

atmospheric pressure.(Earnest Z)

Boiling and Evaporation?

What is the difference between boiling and evaporation? Well boiling is when a

liquid changes into a ga. Then evaporation is the exact same thing except it happens without

boiling. Boiling happens in a liquid or in a contained area with water like a pot. Evaporation

happens on the surface of a liquid and on a exposed area like a countertop or on the

ground.Boiling happens at a definite temperature or the boiling point. Evaporation can

happen at any temperature.(Mini Physics)

Measurements?

How do you accurately measure how fast water boils? According to (UChicago.edu)

you want to follow these six steps.First fill a container half full of water preferably a glass

container. Then place it on a heat source until the water comes to a boil. Next you want to

use something to hold up a thermometer to see how hot the water is and to make sure it isn’t

touching the container.after one minute write down the precise temperature of the water on a
Susag4

sheet of paper. Then do all the steps over again and try to find the average that the water

boiled at and record it.Lastly find the elevation of your city and find the barometric air

pressure on the day you did your project.

I hypothesized that, How Do Different Types of Salt Affect the Speed at Which Water

Boils at. The way I got my results was that I took the temperature of the water to begin with.

Then got the temperature after the water boiled. Finally I put down how much time it took

for the water to be brought to a solid boil. I ran nine tests on the three salts to see if any of

them would match ( I could not get the water to start at the same degrees everytime). The

three salts in my test were table salt, sea salt, and kosher salt. Surprisingly they were

extremely close but did not match. I would like to thank you for reading my paper and have

a nice day.
