Turbine Blade break

Goal:

Model the breakage of a turbine blade

Procedure:

Import turbine geometry

Start Mechanical
Mesh the geometry
Apply appropriate initial conditions
Solve the problem

Create animations of the results

Quick Instructions

Start an Explicit Dynamics system and import the geometry file

“turbine.agdb”
Modify the geometry file so that one blade will not have a
coincident mesh with the drum (In DM RMB on one of the
bodies making up a blade and select Form new part)
Load Steel 4340 from the Explicit Materials data source
Change its yield stress to 600 Mpa
Suppress any bonded contact that may have been automatically
generated
Apply the modified steel 4340 material to the Parts making up the
blades and drum of the turbine (i.e. Part 2 and the separated
blade Part)

Quick Instructions

Set the meshing options for the model

Use Advanced Size Function = Off
Element Size = 0.004 m
Defeaturing -> Deafeaturing Tolerance = 0.004 m

Apply an initial condition of a rotational velocity of -

8,000 rad/s to the 7 bodies making up the turbine
(select a circular edge of the drum for the
direction)

Quick Instructions

Create a cylindrical coordinate system based on

the small front face of the body as follows:

– RMB coordinate systems  Insert coordinate

system

– Change type to ‘cylindrical’

– Define by geometry selection and pick the face

indicated and click on ‘click to change’ and then
‘Apply’

Quick Instructions

Apply a zero velocity constraint based on this coordinate

system to the front and rear cylindrical faces of the
body as follows:

– RMB on Explicit Dynamics and Insert velocity

– Pick the two cylindrical faces of the body

– Define by components
– Change coordinates to ‘Coordinate system’

– Enter both X and Z components of 0.0

Quick Instructions

Run the analysis for 1.0 ms (0.001 s) generating 30 save

files
Create animations of the results to show the
deformation of blades
Question:
If all blades are in the same multi-body part, how to
make a blade fail?
