EXPERIMENT # 2

OBJECTIVE:
To Determine the Reactions of a Simply Supported Beam for Two Loads.

APPARATUS:
Simply Supported Beam,Weight,Spring balance,Hanger.

FIGURE:

THEORY:

 BEAM
Horizontal or inclined structural member spanning a distance between one or more
supports, and carrying vertical loads across (transverse to) its longitudinal axis,as a
girder,joist,purlin,or rafter.

 TYPES OF BEAM
Following are the types of Beams.

1. SIMPLY SUPPORTED BEAM

A simply supported beam is a beam which is simply supported at both ends.

2. CANTILEVER BEAM
A cantilever is a beam anchored at only one end. The beam carries the load to the support
where it is forced against by moment and shear stress.
3. OVERHANGING BEAM
A beam which is freely supported at two points and having one or both the ends
extendingbeyond these supports is known as overhanging beam.

4. PROPPED BEAM
A propped cantilever beam is a beam which is fixed at one end (no translation or rotation)
and simply supported (no translation) at the other end.

5. FIXED BEAM
A beam which is supported or fixed from both the ends is known as Fixed beam.

 LOAD
A Heavy or Bulky mass or Weight that is being carried or is about to be carried is called
Load.

 TYPES OF LOAD
Following are the types of Load.

1. POINT LOAD
A point where a bearing or structural weight is concentrated or transferred to the
foundation is called a Point Load.

2. UNIFORM LOAD
Loads that cover all or part of a beam and throughout the portion covered, the amount of
load per unit of length is the same.

PROCEDURE:
Place the apparatus on a smooth horizontal surface and then hang the beam in thread
hooks connected to spring balances the positions of these hooks are named as A and
B.Then hang two weights W1 and W2 on beam as shown in the figure.Find out the
corresponding lenght L1 and L2 and do the calculations.Compare the recordings of the
spring balances of each test with the calculations.Note the hanger weight is 1N.
