Parts of a Whole

Adapted by: Samantha Amstutz

Media: Mixed Media
Grade Level(s): 3rd
Estimated Class Time: 5 (40 minute classes)

Learning Statement Paragraph:

Students will be learning about color mixing. They will be

seeing how colors interact with one another through the
process of printmaking. The students must problem solve
to get the colors they desire since they will only be given
the primary colors. Applying what they learn in this
technique based exercise, they will then work together and
each create an image that works with their classmate’s to
make a whole circle using each student’s part. The
students are working collaboratively and applying what
they learned about color mixing to create a finished product. Figure 1

Context- Background Information

Vocabulary-
• Primary Colors: Red, blue, and yellow. Primary
colors cannot be made from other colors. Artists
create all the other colors of the rainbow by mixing
together the primary colors.
• Secondary Colors: Green, orange, and violet.
Secondary colors are made by mixing two primary
colors. Each secondary color is made from the two
primary colors closest to it on the color wheel.
• Tertiary Colors: A color produced by an equal
mixture of a primary color with a secondary color
adjacent to it on the color wheel.
• Tint: Produced by adding white to a color.
• Shade: Produced by adding black to a color. Figure 2
• Printmaking: Is where an artist creates an image using one material. Ex: Wood, metal
plate, Styrofoam. Once the lines have been created the artist will then put ink on the
material used with a brayer. The material with ink or paint on it will be flipped on to
paper and pressed down upon.
