LO3 - Evaluation

LO2 For this learning objective you worked on planning and production

What In order to cater to cater to 3 target audiences as part of Unit 10: Engaging with an
genres/formats audience in creative media production, I chose to produce a sports documentary.
Sports documentaries are factual forms of story telling that center around a sport

or sporting topic. I chose this as it is a versatile format and I can choose a topic
and why?
that is relevant to all three target audiences. From my primary research I gathered
that my audience wanted to see a documentary about tactics

When analysing individual responses I learned that tactics was the most popular
among all age groups, meaning that it was popular with all respondents aged 10-
18, 30-40 and 50-60.
How much work In order to complete my production I completed a lot of work outside of lessons.
did you complete The research was conducted almost entirely during lessons. This was due to my
contact with a large number of students who fitted the demographic of 10-18 year
outside of the
olds. I could gain their opinions and adapt my production to appeal to them.
lessons?
Filming was performed entirely outside of lessons. This was due to the
requirement of a football pitch and athletes to film. I arranged with a local football
team, AFC Whitchurch, to attend a training session to record footage. Production
of graphics, animations and on-screen information was completed during lessons
due to the facilities.

The editing was completed at outside of lessons on my personal computer. Due

to a compatability error with versions of Premiere Pro, I could not continue the
editing that I started at home on the college computers. This meant that I was
under pressure to complete the editing thoroughly on time. I believe that, whilst it
was not ideal, I was able to edit effectively to produce a well edited production.
What issues did A major issue I encountered when planning was the organisation of an interview. I
you encounter originally planned to interview a UEFA A licenced coach that teaches at the collefe,
Dave Edmundson. However, due to college work experience he was not available
whilst planning
for an interview for the entire duration of the project. I overcame this by

head coach at AFC Whitcurch and facilitated the interview at the training ground.
Another issue that I encountered was filming of celebrity footballers. In my
documentary I cover the work of professional current and retired footballers. As
they either no longer play football, or due to licensing and profile reasons, I was
not able to film them. I overcame this by using archive footage drawn from
YouTube. This meant that I could have some relevant clips but I had ti limited the
amount of found footage that I used, which impacted the quality of the
documentary.

How did you find The filming process was rather fluent. I produced a production schedule that
the filming and allowed me to prepare for each day of filming and editing.

editing process?
However, in my production schedule I did not account for the issue of Premiere
Pro incompatability (I could not edit both at college and at home). This meant that
I could edit on the days that I dedicated for editing, but would be limited to what I
could do at college and edit the production at home. I filmed b-roll at the training
ground for AFC Whitchurch. This was a great location as it provided space,
excellent lighting and an Astroturf football pitch. I was able to collect sufficient
footage to compliment my narration, which would allow me to edit effectively.

The editing went very well. I was able to compile all my footage, colour correct it
and stylise it to make it visually appealing with ease. When editing I learned how
to make a simple zoom transition, which made my production look more
professional. This transition helps to increase the tempo of the production, which
is appealing to younger viewers.
Do you believe I believe that I met the requirements of my target audiences. The intended target
you met the audiences for my production are males and females aged 10-18, 30-40 and 50-60.
In my research I learned how to cater to various target audiences. My research
requirements of
into the 10-18 age group revealed that I should include some animation or cartoon
your target
work in my production. I implemented this into my production by drawing football
audience? How
players and animating them onto the screen.
This example is when I talk about a retired footballer. The drawing is quite simple,
but looks like the football player, Lev Yashin, as well as being a cartoon. This
appeals to younger audiences as it is a cartoon, but also because information is
displayed on screen, which can make it easier to understand. This shot also
appeals to older adults (50-60) as it references a footballer that is close to their
childhood, therefore the information is relevant to them.

In my survey I asked respondents for their opinion on a camera shot

documentary. My survey revealed that people aged 30-40 wanted to see action
shots and cinematic. From this I decided to incorporate some action clips of
defenders in their role during football matches.
These action shots were useful at the start as it drew people in to watch it. The
action shots are appealing to both 10-18 year olds and 30-40 year olds, due to the
high tempo of the editing. This helped me cater to my target audiences as I
included a range of action shots, relevant information to the audiences and
creative editing.
What was the In order to receive feedback from my peers I sent out a survey that asked
feedback you respondents to watch and comment on my production. I received responses from
people aged 10-18 and 30-40. Therefore, I could gain a scope on the reception of

My second respondent fell into the 30-40 age bracket. This means that I will gain
an understanding of how my production is received by adults. The respondent
showed interest in the documentary and stated that it was enjoyable. They
particularly enjoyed the animated elements, including the lineup graphics and
cartoons. The respondent justified this with saying that they are informative.
However, the respondent also commented on the use of mismatched footage to
the narration.
Overall I would say that the production is popular with 30-40 year olds, but I
should consider using appropriate footage and b-roll to my narration.

Were you able to I was able to show my production to my mother, Jan, who is 50 years old. She is

audiences?

As it was popular in my survey I wanted to produce a documentary that is similarly

formatted. My cinematography is OK, but is in the shadow of the FourFourTwo
film. This takes away slightly from the quality of the production, but only has a
minor impact. I would argue that my production is more interesting, due to the
information being presented in a concise and energetic manner. This is supported
from my feedback, as there was attention to the energy of my presentation. The
survey showed that people were less impressed with “Goalkeeper” because it is
unnecessarily detailed. The animations in mine are good, but the resolution is
quite low, which leads to pixilation when upscaling it.

Another area I hope to hone is my drawing and animation. My use of cartoons and
animation in my production was well-received by all audiences, which show that it
is a significant element in sports documentaries. By improving and raising my
animation to a professional standard I can appeal to target audiences better,
which will improve the reception of my future productions.
