5. Job description: Nursing has a wide range of career paths to suit other people’s
tastes. There are 5 major practices in nursing which are: Administration, Clinical
Care, Education, Policy and Research. Each have their own differences,
Administration nurses coordinate nursing services, and supervise staff. Clinical
Care nurses provide health care services to individuals, families and
communities to help them achieve perfect health. Education nurses teach people
by teaching people how to optimize health throughout their lives. Policy nurses
work with the government and provide advice on health care issues. And
Research nurses review health-care evidence, test hypotheses and more. At the
end of the day nurses are here to help the people in need of care.

9. Skills or characteristics required: Must be able to work under pressure, stress,


and in a fast pace environment. Must have lots of patience when working with the
sick, families, and hard headed patients. Also need to have flexible hours and
can push long shifts without rest.

10. Disadvantages of occupation: Shift work, because many new nurses work 12
hour shifts, and you may have to work at night. You’re always on your feet
moving around for long hours. You’re exposed to patients with disease and
infections. You can experience mental burn out from hearing and witnessing bad
news.
11. Describe how your values, skills and interests relate to this career option: I am
always glad to help others in need, and always had the desire/curiosity to help
around in a hospital. I can stay up long hours without getting sleepy and can
easily match my sleep schedule with my shifts. Ever since I was young, I’ve
always been interested in hospitals and what nurses and doctors to for a living. I
am a fast learning and can take the challenge of becoming a nurse to help
others.

12. What courses and grades are needed to enter this occupation? There are many
steps to get into the nursing program at KPU. First you need to take many pre-
requisites to get into the nursing program. You need the Undergraduate English
Proficiency Requirement to get into Health Foundations, and from there can

finish the last 3 years and take the nursing program. You need a completion of
BC English 12 with a minimum grade of C+. After completing English at KPU,
you can apply for Health Foundations where you will complete the 32 credits in
the course. Once you get your certificate in Health Foundations you can move
onto the nursing program.

13. Working conditions: Fast paced, stressful, direct involvement with patients.

14. Typical hours of work: usually 36-40 hours per week.

15. Describe what has influenced your choice of this occupation: I was always in
and out of hospitals because of my father. His kidneys failed twice in his life. He
had two transplants total. Every time I visited him during his dialysis I would be
interested in what the nurses would be doing. When he got his surgery I would
see many nurses do other things and help people which I want to do.

16. What are the future trends of this occupation: There are many more people who
have been wanting to become a nurse. The nursing occupation has skyrocketed
from 2006. It is expected that there will be 439,000 new RN’s by 2024.
