Nikola Tesla’s dream was to provide the

Short Overview on the BelVis Solution for Smart Metering
BelVis AMC establishes a communication
infrastructure and forms the interface to the
different meters and data loggers which may
be connected using different protocols. It
assumes control of the bidirectional commu-
nication with the intelligent multi-source me-
ters over Multi Utility Communication (MUC,
MUS) and combines them to form a head-end
system. In this way, the user is presented
with a unified view of the different forms of
on-location metering points.

metering service provider solution for the
operation of intelligent household meters.
As a bridge between process data handling
and company-wide information processing,
its comprehensive functions are available
to both sides through data synchronisation.
BelVis MDM is multi-commodity oriented and
conceived with foresight for the implementa-
tion of future smart metering requirements.
BelVis MDM handles the core tasks of a
meter data management system. As a power-
ful central data hub, it unifies and carries
out plausibility checks of metering data and
generates replacement values. The proven
BelVis EDM system uses the data prepared
by the MDM system and carries out classical
business processes in the deregulated energy
market. Time series management forms the
heart of the MDM system. KISTERS uses the
KiTSM time series management system, de-
signed for high volume workloads, to achieve

BelVis MDM quickly processes very large
volumes of metering data and events from
several different commodities at the lowest
possible total cost. Mass collected metering
data from the various different connected AMI
systems is integrated and unified. Connec-
tion of BelVis AMC and other arbitrary AMI
systems is possible using specific protocols.
BelVis EDM accesses data prepared in this
way in order to execute all business processes
and communication with ERP systems. In over

Reliable high-speed communication
As the bridge between AMI and company-
wide information processing, BelVis MDM is
a powerful communications tool. It is capable
of exchanging information with upstream
basic data providing Customer Relationship
Management (CRM) systems and billing or
workforce management systems. All impor-
tant accounting systems (SAP and many more)
may be integrated. Upstream systems employ
BelVis MDM for a range of services:
transmission of configuration data, events,
price signals and tariff models
basic data synchronisation
provision of aggregated time series
spontaneous readings
switching on and off
power limitation and increasing
Data forwarding takes place in two differ-
ent ways: The SOAP service requests access
pre-aggregated data and include compressed
information on consumption or cost. Queries
made to the MDM to supply base time series
of read meter values are made available over
a high-speed interface, due to the enormous
amounts of data.
Forwarding of metering data to market part-
ners (e.g. metering service providers to sales)
takes place using currently valid market com-
munication formats.
Calculations
The BelVis MDM calculation server updates
all power, gas and water load profiles and
carries out plausibility checks. The system
is optimised for high daily read rates (e.g.
quarter hourly). The calculation of all derived
time series is carried out automatically in the
background.
All required calculations may be carried
out using predefined calculation methods.
Above that calculations are freely definable
using formulae (e.g. for balancing and cost
accounting using tariff models). BelVis MDM
functions fundamentally as a parameteris-
able calculation machine, which provides its
results to other applications such as EDM,
forecasting, PFM and billing through com-
munication and services. As a rating engine,
BelVis MDM carries out tariff projection and
preparation of billing statements.
Aggregation and balancing
BelVis MDM aggregates data and prepares all
values necessary for balancing, such as daily
sums and partial sums of tariff times for each
individual meter. It is also capable of evaluat-
ing the tariff time sums with tariff costs and

higher sums with reference to customers,
contractors, balancing groups and networks.
Flexible enough for every application
BelVis MDM scales well and offers power-
ful configuration options, meaning it can
adapt to companies of any size. All modes
of operation are possible: as a solution for a
standalone company, shared operation under
the umbrella of cooperations, or Application
Service Providing (ASP) mode at a service
provider. BelVis MDM provides application
solutions for every size and need.

The BelVis AMC control center is the interface
to practically all smart metering solutions in
the metering field capable of being connected
over modern protocols.
Bidirectional communication
BelVis AMC sends unified metering data to
BelVis MDM and, in turn, accepts data and
commands from MDM over a bidirectional
communication connection, which it then for-
wards to the devices according to the appro-
priate basic data model. BelVis AMC provides
connectivity over the MBUS and SML (Smart
Message Language) protocols.

The BelVis SV Smart Metering Viewer allows
you to motivate your final customers to get
started with smart metering. BelVis SV offers
a precise internet information service with
a quick overview of usage habits for final
customers. Simple views and an easy to use
Comfortable display of consumption
graphical interface allow users to quickly ac-
cess all relevant information, e.g. current and
past energy consumption, the current most
favourable tariff, meter readings, bills and
consumption history. Customers see their real
consumption in kWh and also in euros.
Furthermore, BelVis SV equips energy com-
panies with a new tool to concisely provide
information to final customers over the inter-
net. Aside from the pure consumption data
representations, you can inform your custom-
ers, for example, about added value services,

BelVis SV Mobile is a browser-based solution
which is optimised for an easy access via
mobile devices like smart phones. The look
& feel is geared to the standards that were
established by Apple and the iPhone. To get
access to BelVis SV Mobile you can use the
same account as for BelVis SV. The user can
see his current data consumption and costs on
his mobile device.
BelVis SV Widgets
In case you are already using a portal for
communicationg with your customers, the
BelVis SV Widgets are useful for you. Small
user interfaces that are easy to use and that
run autonomously, are integrated into the ex-
isting portal. Instead of organising a complex
data transfer between different systems, the
BelVis SV Widgets are simply integrated into
the browser. Thus, the meter data can stay in
the central software for meter data manage-
ment (BelVis MDM).
