START BY:
1. Loosen the bolt that holds gear (1) approximately five turns. Install tooling (A), and remove gear
(1) and shaft, bearing assembly and spacer.

2. Mark all the plates and housings for assembly purposes. Turn the transmission over. The weight of
the transmission is 181 kg (400 lb.). Remove bolts (2) and plate (3).
3. Remove three springs (4), three discs (5) and three plates (6).
5. Remove seal ring (9). Drive pin (10) into shaft (11) until shaft (11), gear (12), the bearing and two
washers can be removed. Remove the pin from the shaft.

7. Use tooling (C), and remove snap ring (14). Remove housing assembly (15).
8. Remove piston (16). Remove the two seal rings from the piston.
10. Install tooling (D) to secure one plate and piston in housing (19). Remove housing (19).
11. Remove tooling (D) and the plate. Remove piston (20). Remove the two seal rings from the
piston.

12. Remove three springs (21). Remove the remaining three discs (22) and two plates (23).
13. Use tooling (E), and compress the snap ring until gear and housing assembly (24) can be
removed.
14. Use tooling (F) and a press, and compress the spring until snap ring (25) can be removed.
15. Carefully release the spring pressure, and remove the spacer.
16. Remove spring (26) and the spacer below it. Remove piston (27) from housing (28).

18. Remove snap ring (30), and remove gear (31) from housing (28).
19. Remove two seal rings (32) and snap ring (33) from housing (28).
20. Remove snap ring (34) and hub (35). Remove five discs (36) and four plates (37).

21. Remove gear (38). Remove the lockring, and remove plate (39) from gear (38).
22. Remove plate (40). Remove shaft and planetary assembly (41) as a unit.
23. Remove snap ring (46), gear (45) and spacer (44). Use a soft hammer, and tap gear (42) and
planetary (43) from the shaft assembly.
24. Remove the roll pin that secures plate (47). Remove plate (47) and the bearing.

25. Drive pin (48) into shaft (49) until shaft (49), gear (50), two washers and the bearing can be
removed. Remove pin (48) from the shaft.
26. Remove the lockring, and separate gear (51) from carrier (52).
28. Use tooling (D) to hold the lower piston and one plate to housing (55). Remove housing (55).
Remove two pistons (56), and remove the two seal rings from each piston.
29. Remove three rods (57) and springs (58). Remove the remaining five discs (59) and plates (60).
Remove planetary and gear (61) as a unit.

31. Turn the assembly over, and remove plate (64), gear (65) and bearing (66).
32. Drive pin (67) into shaft (68) until shaft (68), gear (69), the two washers and bearing can be
removed with tooling (G). Remove pin (67) from shaft (68).
33. Put several small roll pins (70) in position between the lockring and gear (71) until carrier (72)
can be removed from gear (71).

35. Remove five discs (74) and five plates (75). Remove ring gear (76).
36. Turn housing (77) over. Remove snap ring (78), and remove the housing from planetary
assembly (79).
37. Remove piston (80), and remove the two seal rings. Remove bearing (81).

38. Remove seal ring (82). Drive pin (83) into shaft (84) until shaft (84), gear (85), two washers and
the bearing can be removed. Remove pin (83) from shaft (84).
NOTE: Inspect all parts for wear or damage, and make replacements if needed. Put clean
transmission oil on the parts at assembly.
1. Install two lip seals (1) on piston (2). Make sure the lip of the seals point up as shown.

2. Install piston (2) into housing (3). Install bearing (4). The notch in bearing (4) must point up as
shown.
Be sure the rubber in pins (9) that hold the shafts in the carrier is
not damaged. If the rubber is damaged, a replacement of the pins
must be made.
3. Install bearing (7), gear (8), two washers (6) and shaft (5) into the carrier. Secure shaft (5) in the
carrier with pin (9).
4. Use tooling (A), and install bearing (10). Make sure it is against (seated) the shoulder in the
carrier. Diameter of bearing (10) after assembly must be 38.138 ± 0.025 mm (1.5015 ± .0010 in.).
5. Install seal ring (11). Make sure the hooked ends of the seal are engaged.
6. Install the planetary assembly (12) so dowel (13) engages with the notch in bearing (4).

7. Turn housing (3) over with planetary assembly (12). Install snap ring (14) that holds the planetary
assembly in the housing.
NOTE: Install the first plate (16) upsidedown with the small hole in alignment with the small hole in
housing (3) as shown.
8. Install ring gear (15). Install five plates (16) and five discs (17). Alternate plates and discs starting
with a plate.
9. Assemble gear (18) and carrier (19). Fasten the components together with lockring (20).
Be sure the rubber in pins (22) that hold the shafts in the carrier is

10. Install bearing (25), gear (24), two washers (23) and shaft (21). Lock the shaft in position in the
carrier with pin (22).
11. Install plate (26) and bearing (27). Put gear (28) through the bearing. Make sure dowel (29) is in
alignment with the notch in bearing (27).
12. Turn the planetary assembly over, and install gear (30) and snap ring (31).
13. Install plate (32). Install planetary and gear assembly (33).
14. Start with a disc, and install five discs (36) and four plates (37).

16. Install two lip seals (38) in the two pistons (39). Make sure the lip of the seals point up as shown.
17. Install two pistons (39) into housing (40). Use tooling (B) to hold the lower piston and one plate
(37) as shown. Be sure the small holes in plate (37) are in alignment with rods (34). Install housing
(40).
18. Install the orifice in the other end of shaft (41) to a depth of 1.25 ± 0.25 mm (.050 ± 0.010 in.).
19. Use tooling (A), and install bearing (42) to a depth of 2.25 ± 0.25 mm (.088 ± 0.010 in.). The
diameter of bearing (42) after assembly must be 25.394 ± 0.039 mm (1.0000 ± .0020).
20. Install bearing (43) with dowel (44) in alignment with the notch in bearing (43).

21. Install spacer (45), gear (46) and snap ring (47).
Be sure the rubber in pins (52) that hold the shafts in the carrier is
not damaged. If the rubber is damaged, a replacement of the pins
must be made.
23. Install bearing (54), gear (53), two washers (51) and shaft (50) into carrier (49). Secure the shaft
in the carrier with pin (52).

24. Install the planetary and gear assembly on the shaft assembly. Install plate (55), and secure it
with roll pin (56).
25. Turn the shaft and planetary assemblies over, and install gear (57).
NOTE: Install the first plate (59) upsidedown with the small holes in alignment with rods (34) as
shown.
26. Install shaft and planetary assembly (58) as a unit. Install four plates (59) and four discs (60).
Alternate plates and discs starting with a plate.
27. Assemble plate (61) to gear (62) with the lockring, and install it on the transmission.

30. Install five discs (66) and four plates (67). Alternate discs and plates starting with a disc.

they almost make contact. See Figure 1. Use care to keep the ring
shaped like a circle. This will make an even bend (or ring "set") all
around the ring. When the seal ring is in the groove, the ends must
butt together lightly. Do not bend the seal ring as shown in Figure
2. This does not make an even bend all the way around the ring.
Do not attempt to use this method to preload a used seal ring. Also,
do not use this procedure for cast iron seal rings. This will cause
used or cast iron seal rings to break.
31. Install snap ring (68) with the ends on each side of pin (69).
33. Install housing (71) over gear (72). Install snap ring (73).
34. Install seal ring (74) on piston (75) with the lip down as shown.
35. Install seal ring (76) on piston (75) with the lip up as shown.

36. Install piston (75) in housing (71). Install two spacers (77) and spring (78).
37. Use tooling (C), and compress spring (78). Install snap ring (79).
38. Install gear and housing assembly (80). Use tooling (D), and install snap ring (68).
39. Install three discs (81) and two plates (82). Install three springs (83). Alternate discs and plates
starting with a disc.

40. Install two seal rings (84) in piston (85). Make sure the lip of the seals point up as shown.
