A Literary Analysis

of The Great Gatsby

By: Lizette Felipe
[Topic] in The Great Gatsby
● Why is this the topic you chose? In other words, how is it relevant to the
novel? Or, why is it an important topic to consider when discussing this
novel?
● The topic that I chose is relevant to the novel because it is talking about
love. It is an important topic to discuss in class because we’ll be able to
see all the love conflict that is in the air. Such as Gatsby loving Daisy but
Daisy is married because she could not wait for Gatsby, so she had went
on to love Tom.
● “In his blue gardens men and
girls came and went like
moths among the
whisperings and the
champagne and the
[Simile] stars.”(pg. 39)
● This choice indicates my
topic because it is comparing
two things, the men and
women with moths from the
party.
● “But above the gray land and
the spasms of bleak dust
which drift endlessly over it,
you perceive, after a moment,
[Color gray the eyes of Doctor T.J
Eckleburg.”(pg. 23)
Symbolism] ● This choice indicates to my
topic because the color gray
could represent a valley of
ashes, or Doctor T.J eyes.
Referring to the eyes how
there something always
watching.
● “You always have a green
light that burns all night at
the end of your dock…
possibly it had occurred
[Symbolism vanished forever...distance
that had separated him
Green Light] Daisy…”(pg. 92-93)
● This choice indices to my
topic because the topic,
because the green light could
represent hopes with Daisy,
but you can’t go back to the
past.
● “But his heart wa in a
constant, turbulent riot.”(pg.
99)
[Metaphor] ● This choice indicates to my
topic because Gatsby could
be feeling restless, or useless
toward Daisy.
● “I don’t think she ever loved
him,” Gatsby turned around
from a window… You must
remember, old sport, she was

[Motif] very excited this

afternoon…”(pg.92)
● This choice indicates to my
topic because Gatsby feels as
if Daisy was in love with him
at one point.
● “Gatsby believed in the green
light, the orgastic future that
year by the recedes before
us.” (pg. 180)
[Symbolism] ● This choice indicates to my
topic because the light help
Gatsby with hope that he had
with Daisy, and with the love
that they had.
Theme:
People would do anything in their
ability to get the love of their life.]
A Final Word...
● What would you tell next year’s juniors about why we read The Great
Gatsby? Think about what makes it an important work of American
literature, and in what ways reading it may have improved your reading
and thinking skills.
● What I would tell next year’s juniors about why we read The Great
Gatsby because you would learn many other literary devices, such as
motif. What makes it important to work on American literature because
you’ll be able to understand the connections that the books have to the
past. The way reading may improve your reading and thinking skill is by
reading the chapter that were signed to you every night.
