Introduction to Travel & Tourism – Unit 1

Aims:
 Students to understand the meaning of the terms ‘travel’ and ‘tourism’
 Students to be aware of the different sectors of the travel and tourism industry

Resources:
 Photo cards for sorting & category labels
 1.0_IMAGES _ STARTER.ppt  1_ category labels2.ppt

Starter:
 Put the cards on the table (or in ‘sets’) – students to ‘sort’ images into categories
(but give them NO GUIDANCE on what the categories could be)

Hopefully – they may identify different sectors of T&T – travel, natural attractions,
man made attractions, places to eat, places to stay…..
 Accommodation  Tour operators
 Catering  Transport
 Guides (tours etc)  Visitor attractions (natural/man
made)
 Give out category labels – for students to sort all cards into correct
categories.

What is Travel & Tourism? brainstorming 1st

Travel: ways of getting a person from one place to another – by road, rail or air.
1. How many different types of transport have you used?

Tourism: Is a service based industry – giving people something to visit.


2. How many different types of tourist activities have you experienced?

Put a few of their ideas onto the main board – in 3 specific columns – to lead into
the next task….. domestic, incoming and outbound.

3. Types of Tourism?
Domestic Tourism – within the UK
Incoming Tourism- foreign visitors to the UK
Outbound Tourism – us travelling abroad!

4. ICT TASK> Powerpoint – create a slideshow to demonstrate the different type of


travel & tourism that each student has experienced over the last 2 years.

Homework: Demo an
Write a short description of your TWO of your own experiences of tourism. Include the method of
transport used and whether you made use of any of the ‘categories’ used in today’s tasks. Your
example
experience can be domestic and or outbound tourism. (Doesn’t have to be a holiday – can be a day for them!
trip!)

Plenary:
What are the different types of ‘tourism’? Can anyone name the 5 categories of tourism?

Remember that tourism does not necessarily mean a holiday – it can be a


day trip out – no need to stay overnight!

HOMEWORK
Write a short description of TWO of your own experiences of tourism. Your experience can be domestic
and or outbound tourism and it doesn’t have to be a holiday – it can be a day trip! Include in your
description the method of transport used and whether you made use of any of the ‘categories’ below…
