Discuss the portrayal of violence or insanity in at least two literary texts that you have studied.

In the novel entitled Purple Hibiscus written by Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, violence is a
recurring motif. Purple Hibiscus takes place in Nigeria in 1994 during British Colonialism. The firm form of
violence was through Colonialism. Colonialism has led to corruption and violence in Nigerian society. Through
Colonialism, English has been established as the dominant language of the country. There were also
Christian missionaries who converted a significant portion of the population, including Papa Eugene, to
Catholicism. The second form of violence is Papa Eugene. Papa uses violence to enforce oppression in his
own family such as beating them and whipping them.
