HOPE 12: INTRODUCTION TO OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES

LESSON 1: Nature and Background of Outdoor Recreation

Recreation – from latin word “recreare” which means “to be refreshed” ; refers to activities that take place during an
experience known as leisure.
Outdoor – is a space outside an enclosed area, includes natural environment and resources which comprises the Land,
Water, Wildlife, Vegetation, Open Space and Scenery
Outdoor Recreation – is done during one’s free time for his/her own personal reasons, where an interaction between
man and an element of nature is present.
- Any activity that is pursued outdoors during leisure-time.
- Any physical activity that contributes to achieving the recommended amounts each day.

Classification of Outdoor Activities


* done during vacation
* they want to have fun
* done outdoors with nature

Passive Recreational Activities – done during leisure but at a sedentary position.


Active Recreational Activities – requires one to expend energy while performing.

Three Parts of Day


1. Existence Time- time spent for biological needs like having a meal, sleeping and other personal care.
2. Subsistence Time – refers to the hours spent for economic purposes such as going to work, chores and for students
and school work.
3. Free Time – to do things which you want to do but have been unable to do so because of “lack of time” such as
continuing a project or undone homework or perhaps going out with friends.

Canyoneering Fishing

Note: Each group must demonstrate 1 recreational activity relative to the topic.
