Electrical Measurement and Instrumentation     Assignment 2 (10%)

Discuss and answer the following problems according to your network. You will have some time to discuss
individually some of the questions with your instructor for marking.

1. What are the various Dynamic characteristics of a measuring instrument? At the least, you have to
understand what they mean the following terms used to study the dynamic characteristics of a
measuring instrument: Speed of Response, Fidelity, Lag, and Dynamic Error.
2. What is the percentage error of a voltmeter with a resistance of 1M when used to measure a circuit
voltage if the circuit has a resistance (a) 1K, and (b) 50K?this can be done using the concept of voltmeter loading
effect
3. What resistance should an ammeter have to measure with an error of no more than 5%, the current in
a circuit having a resistance of 300? this can be done using the concept of ammeter loading effect
4. A 0 to 1mA milliammeter has 100 divisions, which can easily be read to the nearest division. What is
the resolution of the meter? resolution concept
5. Compute the reading of a voltmeter having 5000Ω/V on a range of 0-5V scale when connected to the
circuit shown below. how the voltmeter reads the voltage accros the resistor

400kΩ

100 V

25V

6. A moving coil microammeter has a full scale, or range value, of 100uA and an internal resistance of
750Ω. Calculate the value of the adjustment resistor necessary for the conversion of the moving coil
instrument into an 'ohm-meter of series type ' assuming a 1.5 V battery to be used.
7. There are two possible ways to design a multirange analog ammeter with PMMC. These are, direct
method and indirect method (i.e. Ayrton or universal Shunt). First, understand these methods of
designing a multirange ammeter. Then solve the following design problem. direct and indirect method of
multirange ammeter
a) Design a multi-range ammeter by using direct method to give the following ranges 50mA,
1A, 10A, and 100A. If d’Arsonval meter have internal resistance of 10Ω and full scale current
of 1mA and draw the designed circuit with a switch and current range labeled.
b) Design a dc ammeter using the same d’Arsonval meter by indirect method for the same
current ranges of 50mA, 1A, 10A, and 100A and draw the designed circuit with a switch and
current range labeled.
8. Study a multirange analog voltammeter with PMMC.
9. What is an electrodynamometer? What electrical quantity can be measured with this instrument? At the
least, try understanding how this instrument is used to measure ac and/or dc current.
10. a) The FET input voltmeter circuit in Figure below has the following components: R1 = 6.8kΩ, R2 = R3
=4.7kΩ, R4 = 1.5kΩ, R5 = 500Ω, R6 =3.3kΩ, Rs+ Rm = 20kΩ. The meter full-scale current is 50μA, the
supply voltage is ±10 V, the transistors have hFE = 80, and the FET gate-source voltage is VGS = -3V.
Determine Vp, Is, Im I2, I3, and I4 when E =0. Also, calculate the range of adjustment for Vp.

b) Calculate the meter deflection, when the attenuator is set to its 5V range, and the input voltage level
is 4V.
11. The noninverting amplifier voltmeter circuit in Figure below uses an op-amp with IB = 300 nA, and a
50 uA meter with Rm = 100 kΩ. Determine suitable resistances for R3 and R4 to give full-scale
deflection when the input is 300 mV.
