COMMENTS: (strengths, areas for growth, next steps):

I would strongly recommend any educational establishment to employ Brandon Greenaway (Vennell) as an
educator.
STRENGTHS from AT:
Brandon began his placement already demonstrating a key strength: knowledge and familiarity of curriculum
content and connecting concepts to real-life applications. For example, his expertise in science immediately
engaged and elevated student learning. He is extremely prepared for lessons and is always looking ahead in
the schedule/week by asking questions to keep organized and prepared.

Brandon's greatest strength, however, is his keen response to feedback and implementation of "next steps"
without any hesitation. This attribute has resulted in tremendous improvement over his 5 week placement,
especially in the following areas:

-Classroom Management Skills

Brandon now does very well to implement what I call the "three pillars of structured learning" 1) constantly
reiterates his EXPECTATIONS of student behaviour and performance - and positively reinforces expected
behaviour by asking model students to deposit contributions toward our group reward jar (as opposed to
individual rewards which sometimes creates negative attitudes amongst students) 2) facilitates ROUTINE by
updating our daily visual agenda (picture symbols) on front board 3) uses TIME and TIMERS to keep
everyone motivated and on track (also using "fresh air zaps" to give students a quick outside break before
transitioning to another subject/topic).

-Meeting Needs of Students with Special Needs

Better than any student teacher I've seen, Brandon notices, reports, and addresses the needs of students
struggling. For example, he noticed a girl demonstrating a gradual decline in engagement and performance.
He reported this to myself and the RT. He and RT decided to try some strategies to help the student. Among
learning challenges, it was discovered that the student is currently suffering from emotional turmoil from her
home life. It's quite obvious this effort by Brandon has had a significant positive impact on the student.

-Building Student/Teacher Relationships

Of top importance for learning, Brandon does a great job of building and maintaining positive relationships
with students. The students enjoy his lessons and appreciate his presence. I'm excited for Brandon to begin a
teaching position to extend this skill to build positive relationships with parents/guardians (another key to
student engagement).

NEXT STEPS by AT:

-continue to use "freeze shakers" as an alternative to get student attention
(that's all I got !! He's implemented EVERY Next Step I've given him - about 30 - over his placement!)

STRENGTHS from Students:
-"very kind and generous person.. a great teacher!"
-"meets individual needs of students and engages the audience"
-"doesn't just teach from the text book - talks about real life stuff"

NEXT STEPS from Students:

-"a little more hands-on learning"
-"while whole-group teaching, do little check-ins to see if everyone is understanding the lesson thus far"

All the best Brandon in your present and future endeavours. Contact me anytime for a reference. And
remember.... there is always jobs for good teachers.
