Leon “LG” Greenberg lived life to the fullest as a public servant, an entrepreneur and a larger-
than-life host who made everyone feel welcome. LG had a zest for life. He lied about his age to
enlist in the Navy during World War II. He became a State Trooper in North Carolina, during
which time he served as Ava Gardner’s body guard. He started the retail chain 5-7-9 and eventually
moved to Southern California where he retired after selling a successful insurance agency.
Not content to while away his retirement years, LG combined his love of entertaining with
his search for a good steak in the Coachella Valley by opening the first LG’s Prime Steak-
house in 1991 in an historic 1948 adobe building on Highway 111 in Palm Desert.
Awards and loyal patrons followed, and two additional locations – one in Palm Springs and
one in La Quinta – were added. LG became a local celebrity, mingling with customers and
having his picture taken in one of his signature sweaters.
