FINAL EXAMINATION

MECHANICS OF MATERIALS 2

BSC. IN MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

Q1 a) Compare pure shear stress and pure principal stress for stress tensor. (4 marks)

b) A processing plant cylindrical steel pressure tank of 500 mm in diameter

is to operate at standard internal pressure of 5.5 MN/m2. The maximum
operation on tank internal pressure is proposed to be increased by three
times as a measure to improve the efficiency of process. Evaluate the
tank condition which is built from material with 130 MN/m2 yield
strength and its suitability for the new operation and justify your answer.
(9 marks)

c) A designer proposes a design of a pressure vessel tank with

hemispherical end with a constant wall thickness. As an engineer you
noticed that the proposed design is not appropriate. Criticise the design
of the tank wall thickness with justification.
(12 marks)

Q2 a) A car engine produce a torque of 396 Nm on a drive shaft with a circular

cross-sectional area of 314mm2. Assess whether a solid shaft or hollow
shaft is suitable to be used for the drive shaft. Justify your answer. (12 marks)

b) Two solid steel shafts are connected by gears as shown in Figure Q2(b).
Shaft AB is fixed while shaft CD is free end. Maximum torque T0 is
applied at the end A of the shaft. If gear B is switch with gear C,
evaluate whether the twist angle at end A would increase or decrease.
Justify your statement. (13 marks)

Q3 a) Develop the stiffness behavior of a uniform rod subjected to axial

tensile force as shown in Figure Q3(a). (5 marks)

b) Steel propeller shaft as shown in Figure Q3(b) is mainly used in an

airplane engine and will undergo rotational movement. The engine is
specified to have mass of 200kg. Evaluate the system and recommend
the suitable speed for the engine. (8 marks)

c) To effectively isolate engine vibration from an automobiles structure,

the stiffness and damping coefficient of the engine mount should be as
small as possible. Design an engine mount for engine having a mass of
200kg that vibrates with harmonic force of 10N amplitude (assume
constant for all engine speed). (12 marks)

Q4 a) A spring-mass system has a natural period of 0.21 second. Compare

the new period if the spring constant is increased by 50 percent and
decreased by 50 percent. (4 marks)

b) At the top of a door is a spring to make it shut automatically. The

spring is damped to control the rate at which the door closes. The
spring natural frequency is 1.03 rad/sec and the door equivalent mass
is 23.75kg. Recommend a damping coefficient of the door spring so
that the door closed without oscillating. (6 marks)

c) A motorcycle of mass 200 kg, with suspension having overall stiffness

of 2400 N/m and damping coefficient of 555 N.s/m travels over a
rough road (approximated as sine wave with 50mm amplitude and
distance of 0.25m between successive peaks). Provide justification on
the reason vibration amplitude is higher at 15 km/hr than 100 km/hr for
the motorcycle. (15 marks)
