Participation reaction of BaCl2 and H2SO4

In chemistry, a precipitate is an insoluble solid that emerges from a liquid solution.
Precipitates can also form when the temperature of a solution is lowered. Lower temperatures
reduce the solubility of salts, which may result in their precipitation as solids. Generally,
precipitation happens when one phase is ejected from another - a liquid ejects a solid, or a gas
ejects a liquid or solid.

Precipitates can form when two soluble salts react in solution to

form one or more insoluble products.
soluble salt 1 + soluble salt 2 → insoluble salt (precipitate)
One common laboratory example of a precipitation reaction is the reaction of BaCl2 and
H2SO4. Barium Chloride (BaCl2) is added to a solution containing Sulfuric Acid (H2SO4

BaCl2(aq) + H2SO4(aq) → BaSO4(s) + 2HCl(aq)

Key Terms

Solubility: The relative ability of a solute to dissolve into a solvent.

Aqueous solution: The solvent is usually present in larger amount than the solute.
When water is the solvent, the solution is called Aqueous solution.
Solute: The compound that dissolves in solution (can be a solid, liquid, or gas).
Solvent: The compound (usually a liquid) that dissolves the solute.
Purpose

The purpose of this experiment is to calculate the percent yield produced of the reaction
of BaCl2 and H2SO4. Next, the melting point of Barium Chloride would be determined
by digital melting point apparatus.

Procedure

1. Taking safety precautions.

2. Distilled water was Added to 1g of barium chloride (s) until full dissolution.
3. Barium chloride solution was mixed with sulfuric acid solution.
4. Filter funnel was placed in a flask.
5. Filter paper was folded and placed in the funnel.
6. Swirl the reaction mixture and leave it for 13 minutes for filtration.
7. After a while, a transparent solution would be in the container. If the solution is
not clear, and white cloudiness remains in it, you will need to repeat the filtration.
8. The wet filter paper was removed carefully from the funnel and place on a clean
dry paper towel.

Materials

BaCl2
H2SO4
50 mL Beakers
Funnel
Filter paper
balance
Pipet
Distilled water
Boiling point measuring apparatus
Data

Mass of BaCl2: 1.0 g

Mass of the precipitate barium sulfate is 0.3g

The actual mass of the precipitate is 1.12 g

The percent yield was 26.78%

The boiling point of the barium sulfate is over 300

Analysis

The percent yield was calculated from the following law. The practical results would
always be less than the actual.

Discussion

The reaction of BaCl2 and H2SO4 is considered one of the common participation
reactions. The error in the percent yield could be from handling the materials and some
of the solution was hard to remove form the filter paper. The melting point was
determined by M.P apparatus after following the steps to turn it on. To avoid errors in
this step, the observation of the sample should be accurate enough to follow the phase
transition of the measured sample.

Conclusion

The reaction of barium chloride (BaCl2) with sulfuric acid (H2SO4) forms hydrochloric
acid (HCl) and a precipitate of barium sulfate (BaSO4). Then, the melting point of BaCl2
(powder) could be determined by measuring the M.P of the yield using the M.P
apparatus.

BaCl2(aq) + H2SO4(aq) → BaSO4(s) + 2HCl
