Optionally, optical STM-1 interfaces can be provided in the A9125 TC, in order to improve the transmission
efficiency. This can be done by means of installing additional TCIF boards.
This solution provides a flexible transmission resource switching in SDH network, and more reliability due to
available redundancy features in SDH network
It is available for both BSC (A-ter interface) and MSC (A interface) connection
NOTE: For more information regarding STM-1, please refer to Chapter 4 – Transmission Interfaces, and to

Speech functions
z Speech encoding and decoding for Full, Half, Enhanced and Adaptive multirate.
z Discontinuous Transmission. This contains the voice activity Detection and the
comfort noise measurement in the Downlink direction. In the Uplink direction, it
contains the confort noise insertion and speech extrapolation.
z Voice quality improvement :
} Adaptive Multi Rate codec AMR is a set of 8 speech codecs with different codec rates from 12.2 Kbps to
4.75 Kbps. The codec rate is adapted dynamically depending on the radio interface quality. If the radio
interface has a bad quality, the codec rate low and the codec will add a lot of redundancy.
} Wideband speech coding extends speech bandwidth between 50 Hz up to 7000 Hz. The extension from
3400 to 7000 Hz provides high intelligibility. The extension down to 50 Hz adds the feeling of transparent
communication and supports speaker recognition. The result is a significant improvement in the speech
quality compared to narrow band speech. In Alcatel-Lucent-Lucent implementation, Wideband AMR uses
6.60 Kbps, 8,85 Kbps and 12,65 Kbps. In order to take benefit from the high voice quality offered by this
codec, TFO should be used.
} Tandem Free Operation. In the case of mobile to mobile call, the speech is transcoded in the mobiles and
the transcoder could be by passed. This would result in a much better voice quality because it removes
double transcoding.

Functional Blocks
z MT120 board is the main functional unit. It provides the multi-rate transcoding for up to 120 channels. This board has
interfaces for one A-ter mux trunk towards the BSC and up to four A trunks toward the MSC.
z FANU board provides cooling for the MT120 boards in the rack.
z TCIF boards (which can be installed optionally in the 9125 TC rack) provide an STM-1 interface used to carry the Ater
and A interfaces multiplexed in an STM-1 format, minimizing the number of transmission links (4 STM1 instead of 240 E1
links).
z TC Internal Link is a duplicated bus that connects all the MT120 boards of the rack. The TCIL bus is involved in the
following functions:
} Forwarding the configuration information coming from the BSC over the Qmux connection, to the other MT120 boards
from the same cluster (see later for cluster definition).
} Downloading the software from the TC terminal.
} Sending alarm information to the TSCA board, via the MT 120 board that manage the Qmux connection with the BSC.
z TC terminal is a personnel computer loaded with the TC terminal software and connected to Alcatel 9125 transcoder via
MMI link. The MT120 physically connected to the TC terminal is the master on the TCIL bus and routes all the messages
exchanged between the TC terminal and all the other MT120 boards
Interfaces
z A-ter mux Interface :
} The TC is connected to the BSC or MFS via the A-ter mux interface. In case of a connection to the MFS,the A-ter mux
possibly conveys the Gb interface. All interface are standard 2048Kbits/s G703. Both 4:1 and 3:1 submultiplexing but
only TS0 transparency are supported. The traffic channels are processed in the MT120 board. SS7,OMC-R X.25 and Gb
channels go transparently through the MT120
} It supports GPRS granularity mapping ( e.g. 3/4 GSM &1/4 GPRS)
z "A" interface connects the Transcoder to MSC . This is a standard G703 interface that carries 64Kbits/s channels
z As an option, several A-ter mux and/or A interfaces (max. 63) can be connected to the TC via an SDH transmission
network, on a STM-1 interface
z O&M interface The BSC performs the O&M access via the Qmux bus. This access is used for configuration and supervision
of MT120 board. There is a 1+1 connection, operating in active /standby mode,These 2 connections are carried on two
1200-bits/s channels conveyed by the the first 2 A-ter mux links.
z X21 interface: This interface is managed by MT120 board and supports X25 channels used to interconnect the G2 BSC to
the OMC-R.

It is possible to put any MT120 board in any position of the subrack. However for easy operational procedures
the simplest filling rule has been adopted: the rack is filled on a MT120 modularity from left to right and from
bottom to top if cabling is performed from bottom or from top to bottom if cabling is performed from top.
The connection information (witch BSC A-ter Mux is connected to witch MT120) is available via the TC terminal.
Cooling :
z Each subrack is equipped ( when MT120 is present) with 3 fans cassette( identical to those use in Alcatel
9100BTS)
z Top and bottom plates as well as front and rear doors are perforated to provide sufficient air flow inside the
rack for the cooling
z Each MT120 is equipped with a sensor for permanent temperature measurement.Three thresholds are
defined :
} If the low threshold is reached, MT120 sends an alarm to BSC. This does not impact the traffic
} If the medium threshold is reached, the MT120 stops some DSPs and sends to the BSC alarms on these
channels for blocking. These channels are no more available for traffic
} If the high threshold is reached, the MT120 sends to BSC alarm and goes to out of order state. MT 120
board is no more available for traffic; but automatic restart is performed when temperature decreases.
z The fan speed is software controlled to reduce at maximum the level noise. Each MT120 controls the fan on
the same subrack ; the fan speed depends on the highest MT120 temperature in the rack (all fans in the rack
have the same speed)

Two redundant power lines input are provided by Alcatel 9125 cabinet; 2 circuit breakers (one per branch) are
provided per subrack. BATR, BAT0 and BAT1 power lines are individually filtered, BATR is common to both
distribution branches.
The Top Rack Unit (JSTRU) is in charge of power supply distribution and protection inside the rack. 10 circuit
breakers are mounted on the TRU. Each one corresponds to one subrack and to one distribution branch.
When the so called “2wire” connection mode is required, a strap connects the BATR signal to the rack
protective ground terminal outside the EMC closure.
The power consumption for a full rack is lower than 2500 watts (power consumption for MT120 board = 50watts).

9125 TC (Transcoder) B11 Description
Example of a Alcatel 9125 TC interconnection with one BSC and one MFS:
z The figure shows the connection of a BSC to a set of six MT120 boards (Cluster). In this example A-ter 1 to 3
carry just CS traffic and 4 to 6 mixed CS and Pstraffic.
z N7 CHANNELS
} The signalling number 7 channels are managed by the DTCs 1,5,9,13,17 and 21. These channels go
transparently through the MFS and transcoder. The rate of this channel is 64Kbps
z GSM CIRCUITS ( TCH)
} In case of direct connection to the transcoder, they are transcoded in TC
z GB CHANNELS
} The rate of the GB channel is N*64Kbits/s. These channels go transparently through the transcoder. 2
channels are used for redundancy
z Qmux CHANNELS
} They are used for O&M functions from BSC (Alarms, object status..). The rate of the Qmux channel is 1200

A Alcatel 9125TC cluster is a group of up to six MT120 boards allocated to one BSC rack.
z The MT120 managing the first two A-ter Mux are the master, working in active / standby mode. These master
manage the Qmux interface.
z The other MT120 boards of the cluster are attached to the master during installation phase.
z The members of a cluster can be any MT120 board in the rack. This simplifies extension and reduction.
Seen from the BSC, a cluster is a logical TC equipment, a group of six A-ter Mux interfaces. The BSC supervises
the related cluster and communicates with the master. The master forwards the messages received from the
BSC to the other MT120 boards in the cluster via the TCIL bus.
As in Alcatel 9125 transcoder we can have up to 12 MT120 per sub-rack,and up to 4 sub-racks in a rack, this leads
to a maximum of 48 MT120 modules. We can then foresee to connect different BSC to the transcoder. As in
each cluster it is recommended to have at least 2 MT120 (for Qmux redundancy), the maximum number of BSC
to connect to a TC is 24, with 2 A-ter Mux for each BSC.

7
8
9
Overhead width = 9 columns
Currently, in the transmission equipments is widely used the SDH – Synchronous Digital Hierarchy. In this
operation mode, several data streams belonging to plesiochronous signals with different rates are mapped in
corresponding "Containers"; the frame is then synchronised from a clock which is common to all the network
equipments.
There are different basic transmission rates defined for SDH in the standards; the first one is 155.52 Mbit/s,
referred to as STM-1 (there are also higher rates defined: STM 4, STM 16 and STM 64). The STM-1 (Synchronous
Transport Module) is a multiplexed structure which can carry on a synchronous frame a number of 63 E1
signals (on a VC-12 Virtual Container).
The basic STM-1 frame is composed of an overhead and a virtual container capacity; it can be represented as a
rectangular structure of 270 columns and 9 rows, which gives a total of 270 x 9 = 2430 bytes. The frame period
is therefore:
(2430 byte x 8 bit/byte)/155.52·106bit/s = 125ms.
