In a small village there lived two friends whose

names were Sethu and Madhavan. These two lived in
the nearby streets and were always found together.

One day..

Sethu: Madhavan there is a festival going on in our

nearby village..we will go.
Madhavan: Hey wait for me. Let me tell my mom
and come.

Madhavan went and told his mom and come back.

Madhavan: Let’s go…My mom told me that we

should go safely and return home.

Both of them started walking in the jungle.

Sethu: Madhavan, come fast!

Then all of a sudden they heard some noise.

Madhavan: What’s that noise Sethu?

Sethu: Hey, it seems like the noise of a bear.

They looked towards the direction from where the

noise was coming. They saw a bear coming.

Sethu: Madhavan…the bear is coming towards us.

Climb the tree fast because the bear does now know
how to climb a tree.

Madhavan: Hey Sethu, I didn’t know how to climb a

tree.

Sethu started climbing the tree.

Madhavan: Please help me..

While Madhavan is pleading like this the bear came

nearer to the tree.
Madhavan: Oh God, what shall I do now? The bear is
coming near me.
All of a sudden…Madhavan remembered what his
teacher had said once in the class. He suddenly laid
himself on the ground and acted as if he was dead. The
bear came near him. It first smelled him, then went
round and round and sniffed against his face.

Then the bear went back the way it had come. Once
the bear left, Sethu who was watching all this climb
down the tree and came near his friend.

Sethu: Madhavan please get up. The bear has left.

Please wake up.

Madhavan got up.

Sethu: Madhavan, I could see the bear telling

something in your ears. What did it say?
Madhavan: It said that a friend who does not stand by
you in times of need is not at all a friend.

Sethu bowed his head out of shame. Madhavan walked

alone back to his home.

Class, let us go over the events happened in the

story.

If you were Sethu and Madhavan, what do you

think you would do as you hear a loud sound of a
bear?
I would run as fast as I could.
I would hide in the bushes.
I would also climb the tree like Sethu.
That’s great!

If Sethu did not climb the tree, what do you think

would happen to him?
The bear might bite/hurt him.
Yes that’s possible.

How about Madhavan, if he did not play dead,

what will happen?
The bear might bite/hurt him too.
That’s correct!

What do you think would happen next to the

boys?

Will they be still friends?

Maybe Madhavan will forgive Sethu because they are
really the best of friends.

Sethu and they will be friends again.

Okay class, what did you do to answer the

questions I’ve asked?
We think of a possible event that could happen.
Do you have any idea of how do we call that
process?
Predicting Outcomes.
Perfect!
We call that process “Predicting Outcomes”.

What is predicting outcomes?

Predicting outcomes is just like guessing as to what
will happen next.
Alright! You have the idea.
Please read.

(The teacher will post the word “Predicting

Outcomes” on the board.) Predicting outcomes means telling events or possible
thing that will happen next in a particular situation.

Correct! In other words, you are giving

prediction.
Let us first know exactly the meaning of the word
predicting or prediction.

(Teacher will post the meaning of prediction on

the boar then pupils will read it.)
A prediction is a good guess about something or about
future events.
From the events or situations that I’ve presented
to you awhile back, how did you tell what could
possibly happen?
I predict what happened next because I experienced it
also.

I was able to tell what could possibly happen next in a

situation because I analyse the events presented

Okay, let us find out if your answers are all

correct from the graphic organizer on the board.

(Each pupil will go to the board and check if their

answers are correct)

A person may predict outcome by means of the

following. Everybody read it and compare it to
your classmate’s answer.
1. By using the clues that may be mentioned directly
in the story.
2. Personal experiences may also help in predicting
outcomes.
3. Finally, understanding cause and effect can help a
person determine the likely results of given
situations.
Is it clear class?
Yes ma’am!

Therefore class, when a person makes a

reasonable guess as to what will happen next in a
story or situation presented, he or she is
predicting outcomes.

Did you understand our lesson for today?

Yes ma’am!

umbrella. What do you think will happen to
Daniel?

practiced the dance steps very well. She smiled as she
came out on the stage. Then Misha _________.

(N-I-C-E nice! nice! Nice!)

5. Generalization:
Again, what is predicting outcomes?
It is giving possible events that could happen
next in a given situation.
Correct!

What are the ways for us to be able to predict

outcomes in different situation/stories?
 By using the clues that may be mentioned directly
in the story.
 Personal experiences may also help in predicting
outcomes.
 Finally, understanding cause and effect can help a
person determine the likely results of given
situations.
Excellent!

6. Valuing
What moral value did you learn from the story of
“Two Friends”?
I learned about the value of being a true friend to some
especially during the times of troubles.
That’s right!
Class being a true friend means that you’re going
to stick with your friend through thick and thin.
Remember that a friend in need is a friend indeed!

Going back to our lesson, why do you think it is

important for us to develop and enhance our skills
in predicting outcomes?
So that we can be guided on what to and how to react
in a particular situation and also for us to be able to
avoid uncertain circumstances for we already know
what events would happen.
Very well said!
