Nothing Ever Happened by Gonçalo Galvão Teles

2019

A grandfather loses his lands. A father loses his wife. A son loses his life. Three generations at the edge of the abyss.

Synopsys

António is a 70-year old man of rural origin. He lives in the hinterland countryside with his pointer dog, and tends to his fertile fields and vineyards. His son Jorge, 40, unemployed, fetches him to move to Lisbon, where he lives in an apartment with his wife Lena, 38, and his son Pedro, 17. António is forced to leave his lands and home, where he was born and lived all his life, to start from scratch in the city. Once in Lisbon, António is bewildered by his family’s way of life: while his son Jorge does the house chores, with occasional visits to the Employment Centre, Lena and Pedro spend little time at home and hardly see each other. She works in a Perfume shop in a modest Shopping Mall and has an ongoing affair with the shop owner Mário, 35. The grandson, little inclined to studying, prefers to get high on drugs with his friends Maria and Paulo, 17 and 18 respectively, meeting them at old ruins adjacent to their neighbourhood. António tries to stick to his routine. He wakes up early, goes for strolls in the streets and tries to strike up acquaintances. He

meets Arnaldo and Beatriz, both about his age, and builds a friendship with them. Pedro and his two friends jump off from a viaduct over thirty metres high while holding their hands together. Three months go by and time has changed the way António has taken up to life in the city. Jorge’s matrimony is going from bad to worse and Lena yearns more and more to elope with Mário to some place abroad. The suffering Jorge searches an explanation for his son’s suicide. He seeks out Alice and Deolinda, the mothers of Maria and Paulo respectively, hoping they might tell him something that can assuage his pain. He tries to resign himself to his son’s decision and finally asks her wife whether she wishes to separate. In the end, we find António back in the country, besides his son and Clara, a former teacher of Pedro’s, visiting the burnt lands he left behind.

2018

By the beaches of an African country, the Soviets are building a grand mausoleum in honour of the Comrade President. Grandmas are whispering: houses, they say, will be exploded, and everyone will have to leave.

Synopsys

By the beaches of an African country, the Soviets are building a grand mausoleum in honour of the Comrade President. Grandmas are whispering:

houses, they say, will be exploded, and everyone will have to leave. With the help of his friends Charlita and Pi (whom everyone calls 3.14), and with assistance from Dr. Rafael KnockKnock, the Comrade Gas Jockey, the amorous Gudafterov, crazy Sea Foam, and a ghost, our young hero must decide exactly how much trouble he’s willing to face to keep his Granma safe.

João Ribeiro Biography
