love, lasting and happy relationships, and true fulfillment - though it will also work for those only just embarking on
their romantic journey. In that case the top four cards will probably summarise experiences in youth. While it does not
guarantee you that lifelong partner you have been hankering after, it will give you a lot more insight about where to
look, and what you REALLY want from a lover and partner.

Helped me to understand myself better

Jan has done a few readings for me in the last year. My life is going through major changes and it has been wonderful having readings
for guidance. She not only has spot on readings, but she provides insight and direction. She is direct and to the point but also so caring
and "real". This reading showed me that I wasn't ready for someone new until I could put the past one behind me. Open my eyes in so
many ways. this was very personal, but she did the reading with the best caring and love. I will continue to use other spreads to help me
through my growth.

The Celtic Cross

The ten card Celtic Cross is the most common Tarot card layout I've ever come
across. With this popularity there comes the problem of many variances of
placement. Below is the one I use with my comments about the interaction of the
placements.

In my opinion the Celtic Cross works best when used to answer specific questions.
Remember to put some thought into the formulation of the question you wish to
ask.

Here is the spread:

Card 1: The present
Card 2: The immediate challenge facing the querent. You will often pull a difficult
card here, which will indicate an obstacle that must be overcome. When you pull a
"good" card here, examine it carefully because it will still represent a challenge.
Card 3: Distant past, foundation. This card should indicate the root of the subject
matter of the question
Card 4: More recent past, including events. This will indicate events taking place,
not necessarily directly connected to the question. For example, if a love affair
going wrong Card 3 would show the root of why it is going wrong, whereas Card 4
will show something that recently happened to reflect this. You could see this as a
"check comment" card - a way of seeing that the reading is sound.
Card 5: The best that can be achieved. This is directly related to the question.
Note that this may not necessarily gel against Card 10 - it depends whether you are
able to get the best. However, a negative card here probably means that it is worth
cutting your losses rather than putting any more effort into the situation.
Card 6: Immediate Future. This indicates events in the next few days or week(s).
This reading does not cover months.
Card 7: Factors or inner feelings affecting the situation. Compare this against Card
1 in order to understand underlying forces/trends. If there is conflict between them
this tends to indicate that the querent is going in the wrong direction.
Card 8: External influences. People, energies or events which will affect the
outcome of the question and are beyond the querent's control.
Card 9: Hopes or fears around the situation. This may produce a card that confuses
us badly. Always bear in mind that hopes and fears are closely intertwined,
therefore that which we hope for may also be that which we fear, and so may fail to
happen. Sometimes it is useful to draw a second card for clarification after the
reading has been laid, and to read the two together.
Card 10: Final outcome. This is a fairly self explanatory card. However it is worth
saying that if the card comes up somewhat ambiguous, once again it may be worth
drawing three extra cards to clarify. These should be interpreted through the lens
of Card 10. So if the card drawn is the Tower and we draw the Ace of Cups,
Princess of Cups and Four of Cups in a reading about a relationship, the Tower
would indicate that it is time to move on. The Ace of Cup suggests that a new
relationship is promised with better things ahead. The Princess of Cups brings new
love (and possibly pregnancy). The Four of Cups shows deep levels of contentment
and happiness, and many options for progress.

a tarot spread for direct questions

You could try this seven card spread as a variation that answers direct questions
well - it's called an Ellipse Spread:

Card 1: Past influences now having bearing on the situation

Card 2: Now - the influences surrounding you at the minute
Card 3: Future influence having bearing
Card 4: What to do
Card 5: External influences having bearing
Card 6: Hopes and fears
Card 7: Final outcome of this situation.

I find Card 4 particularly useful, especially if you read it against the 'Working with'
section. It allows you to get a handle on the things you need to be doing to help
yourself in this situation now.

A Tarot spread for determining a course of action

You could try this spread for determining a course of action - it's a Five Card
Spread:
Card 1: The present or general theme of the reading
Card 2: Past influences still having effect
Card 3: The future
Card 4: The reason behind the question (this will probably shed light on 2)
Card 5: The potential within the situation.

This is a very useful spread when trying to decide a given course of action. Card 4
will often reveal a subconscious impulse - perhaps a blockage which is stopping you
from achieving your desired result. Card 5 shows the possible results from taking a
given course of action. The spread works best if, whilst selecting the cards, you
concentrate on one aspect of the decision, rather than either/or type questions.

The Mirror Spread

This spread works primarily on existing relationships, but can assess anything from
a budding love affair to an established partnership.

It will often reveal inconsistencies between viewpoints - for example if the cards at
2 and 3 contradict one another, there is a need to re-assess and re-adjust points of
view, or take into account the input of the other person.

Obstacles will sometimes produce very positive cards - look carefully under the
surface if you find this, rather than assuming everything is fine!

The probable result card is drawn with circumstances as they currently are - but if
changes recommended by the reading are effected, then this final card can change.

Here is the spread:

Card 1: The querent.
Card 2: The way you see the other person in the relationship.
Card 3: The way they see themselves.
Card 4: What the person represents to you.
Card 5: What you represent to them.
Card 6: Obstacles within the relationship.
Card 7: Strengths within the relationship.
Card 8: Probable result.

The Mandala Spread

In its purest form the Mandala spread assesses one's spiritual path. It can be
adapted to address specific issues, and questions, or an open reading with no
overall question can be posed.
This spread reveals the strengths, weaknesses and desires which lead one toward a
growth in spirituality, indicating pitfalls and positive points in a way that it is
possible for the querent to put together a much more clear view of their own
progress.

Card 1 must be read against cards 2, 4, and 6 to give an overview of the way
things actually ARE, then against cards 3, 8 and 9 to assess potential. After that
reading Card 1 against cards 5 and 7 to reveal possible problems and areas which
require further work.

Put it all together and you have quite a good overview of your querent's position
and opportunities.

Here is the spread:

Card 1: An overview of the self.

Card 2: Ambitions, goals.
Card 3: Ideals, dreams.
Card 4: Real achievements at this time.
Card 5: Dependencies, faulty beliefs.
Card 6: Strengths and positive traits.
Card 7: Faults and weaknesses.
Card 8: Self perception.
Card 9: Desires.

The Relationship Spread

Here is the spread:

Card 1: Distant past.

Card 2: Recent past.
Card 3: Now.
Card 4: Future influences.
Card 5: External influences.
Card 6: The querent's attitude.
Card 7: Helpful energies.
Card 8: Obstacles to be overcome.
Card 9: Hope and fears.
Card 10: Final result.
Description

1. Past
2. Now
3. Future
4. What to do
5. External or environmental influences
6. Hopes and fears
7. Final outcome

This is a great spread both for specific questions, and for general "snapshot" type readings. If the spread is focussed on
a question it will generally bring clarity and fresh perspectives. If used as a snapshot then it will take a look at the next
two or three months, and shed light on matters that will be particularly important.

The Fool is a joyous and exciting card - combining both perfect trust and self reliance.

As the very first card in the Tarot deck, it marks the moment upon which we embark on a new phase in our spiritual
journey.

When we explore new terrain, we are bound sometimes to encounter danger or challenge. The Fool's energy gives us
the power and self-confidence to move through challenges with an open heart, to recognise friends and to gather
experiences to us as the true treasures that they are.

Innocence is a devalued quality these days. We forget that to approach life with eyes that are new each morning
reveals to us more of life's mystery than anything else. We cannot substitute the sheer growth permitted by trust and
innocence with cynicism nor prior knowledge.

So, on a day ruled by the Fool, we need to lift our hearts upwards and open them to the richness and beauty of life. We
need to regard ourselves as travelling through a land of wonderment and joy. We need to encourage excitement and
exhilaration, and to look constantly for that which is new and bright and hopeful in every step we take.

We also need to trust to the life process, and to remember that, by and large, the gods have no need of our suffering,
and every need of our joy, laughter and celebration.

Affirmation: I tread the path of life with joy in my heart and a smile on my lips.

The Fool is the first card of the Tarot and is generally unnumbered, or numbered zero. The Fool is at the start of our
journey and is the initiator. Seen by many as the innocent, he has an eagerness and freshness about him. He is young
and carefree, entering the World without preconceptions.

The Fool trusts in life and expects his path to be a happy and rewarding one. There is faith in the gods to see him
through and a complete absence of fear.

Sometimes the Fool is seen as too carefree - certainly a good dose of other people's more negative reality could
damage him. However, for as long as the Fool has faith in his own purity and innocence, others will not be able to take
advantage.
This is the child within. This is how we were before the many experiences of life forced us to build up so many walls.
The Fool does not shade himself from the light - here we are born and from here we walk the path. It's time to jump off
the cliff...

The Seven of Wands

The Lord of Valour can best be summed up by the phrase 'feel the fear and do it anyway'. It is a card about
encountering demanding and formidable situations in life, and having the courage to be true to your own desires,
ambitions and needs.

Life is full of challenges. And sometimes we find it difficult to seize the moment, grasp our opportunities and live life to
the full. The 7 of Wands comes up to indicate that you are facing one of those momentous happenings in life, and
advises you to believe in yourself, grab your courage in both hands and go forward.

This will not only apply to difficult things - it can also point out to you that there is an opportunity to make your wildest
dream come true, if only you will throw caution to the winds and dive right in!

The Lord of Valour is an exciting card, but when it comes up you will probably also feel a bit apprehensive. Don't let
caution dampen your enthusiasm. Go ahead! Fight for what you want. If you do, you'll stand a good chance of getting
it.

Because Wands are a suit much concerned (at their deepest level) with the ethics of right living, there is another
instance when this card might show in a reading. That is when you find yourself in a position where you are forced to
fight for what you believe in. Whilst sometimes reluctant to take up the fight, you will feel compelled to stand up and be
counted. Identify this aspect if you have the Aeon (the Last Judgement) or Adjustment (Justice) coming up. Often, if we
acquit ourselves well in times like these, we will achieve major progress in our own spiritual journey.

And remember - there's no courage without fear. If you don't feel fearful, courage is not required!!

The Lord of Valour reminds us to take stock of our inner reserves of courage and strength. It will often come up to
mark times where great change is in the air, where momentous decisions need to be made, and where we must grasp
the moment.

On a day ruled by the 7 of Wands, the most important thing is to be alert for opportunities and great chances. Often
these come up completely out of the blue, and must be seized without hesitation. This card often marks those
apparently coincidental occurrences which begin a chain of events that leads us into a decisive and fulfilling life change.
So pay special attention to everything that happens today.

And at the same time, keep a running check on your own feelings. If today is the day upon which your dearest dream
comes true, how will you feel? Are you ready to let change run in your life? Are you prepared to take risks? And do you
feel that today, you trust yourself?

If you encounter resistance of any sort on a day ruled by the Lord of Valour, remember that this card is about being
true to yourself, following the voice of your own heart, and protecting your needs and hopes.
This is a day in which you need to believe in yourself. So hold hard against anything which interferes with that. Refuse
to allow anything (or anybody) to undermine you. And keep in touch with what you believe to be true. And if you do all
those things, today could bring miracles into your life!!

Affirmation: I welcome life and embrace opportunity.

The Knight of Wands

This is a dynamic and active card, with a great deal of warm enthusiasm and gaiety flowing from its energy. Often
insight and perception increase when it is influential. There are often sudden and unexpected shifts of energy, so that
blockages are swept firmly out of your path, leaving you free to move forward in your chosen direction.

On a day ruled by this card, expect to be directed to take action to remove difficulties and resolve problems, and be
open to guidance from wherever it happens to come. This card is sometimes known by the title "Lord of Lightning" and
he will use life's everyday tools to nudge you in the right direction. Don't be surprised to receive guidance from odd
sources, and pay close attention to what happens around you. Allow yourself to be alert to apparently random input
which will give you clues and ideas that had not occurred to you before.

And then once you have picked up these signs, follow them diligently and determinedly - you'll find they really pay off.
Don't put things on one side for further reference - as soon as you know what action to take, take it. Then sit back and
wait for the next 'nudge'!

Affirmation: I open myself to my own success.

The Knight of Wands

The man represented by the Knight of Wands will be a loving and open-hearted person, with a strong sense of
morality and a great sense of humour. He will be active, energetic and willing to help. You often find these types of men
in the healing professions, or in other areas where they are required to assist, guide and support others.

He's a man with a deep respect for life and all living things, attuned to Nature and to the creatures of the earth. He has
a deep well of compassion which spills over readily to anyone who needs his help, but he also has the restraint to know
when too much assistance is a bad thing. Then he will act to enable and empower, rather than to assisting.

He's a faithful, and dedicated family man, being fully engaged in the domestic situation. His life reflects his high ethical
standards, though he is not given to sermonising, nor standing in judgement on others. He could be defined as an
idealistic realist - accepting the frailties of the race, whilst doing his best to strengthen it.

His faults spring from his good points - for instance, he dislikes causing pain, and will therefore delay when he needs to
act if he thinks it will hurt other people. He will sometimes remain in limiting or painful circumstances because of this.
His sense of rightness and duty is intense, and sometimes drives him to make foolish choices and decisions. He will shy
away from conflict and unpleasant situations, especially when these arise as a result of his own needs, though he will
never walk away from a struggle on behalf of somebody else.

If you are regarding this card as a spiritual change, then see it as an indication that the warrior of right and light is
required - you'll need to stand up for something that matters, and which is unable to defend itself.
