Grant Proposal
FRIT 7232
Spring 2017
Abstract
The Google Apps for Education – Faculty Training Grant is targeted for the 40 faculty
and staff members at Bryan County Middle School. The goal of this grant is to provide training
on specific pieces of the Google Apps software so all faculty and staff members feel prepared to
incorporate them into their classrooms and lessons and provide a common functionality
throughout the school. The interest in the Google Apps software was first gauged by faculty
completing the 2017 Technology Training Interest Survey sent at the end of the 2016-2017
school year. The grant includes five training days, one per month, beginning in August of 2017
and ending in December of 2017, with full implementation and use of the software expected to
begin in January of 2018. The August and December training sessions will be conducted on pre-
scheduled teacher workdays to help limit the number of substitutes needed for the duration of the
grant timeline. The September, October, and November training sessions will be conducted on
normal school days with faculty members being assigned to either morning or afternoon
sessions. The grant requests funding for nine substitutes to accommodate for the training
rotations. Each training day will focus on a specific piece of the Google Apps software with time
allotted for an introduction, training, participation, and summary pieces. Upon completion of the
training, all faculty and staff members will incorporate the use of the Google Apps software into
their lesson planning, classroom management skills, and parent communication resources.
The Leadership Team at Bryan County Middle School wanted to find a way to provide
students with up-to-date technology resources. These resources needed to be easily accessible to
all students and needed to be able to be easily incorporated into all classes. After some
discussion, it was decided to further explore the Google Apps for Education software. At the end
of the 2016-2017 school year, the “Technology Training Interest 2017” survey was sent to all
faculty to gage their interest and experience levels with the Google Apps software. On a scale of
1-5, with 1 being “No Experience” and 5 being “Advanced”, 38.5% of respondents rated
themselves either a 3 or 4. Only 7.7% of respondents rated themselves as a 5. This data revealed
to the Leadership Team that most faculty members were not comfortable with the Google Apps
for Education software and a professional development-training program must be developed and
implemented before requiring any faculty members to use the software. (See Appendix A & B
Goal #1 – By December 2017, teachers will effectively utilize Google Apps for Education

Goal #2 – By the end of September 2017, faculty and staff will effectively implement the
utilization of Google Docs in their classroom to allow for collaboration among co-workers and
students.

Plan of Operation
All collaborative application tasks will involve training participants creating documents
and files using the selected GAFE software. Participants will follow along as examples
are shown and will be encouraged to specialize content to their courses.
The training schedule included in this grant utilizes strategies for highly effective
school year keeping teachers engaged in its usage. It is not a one and done training. It allows
teachers to meet at regularly scheduled times. It also allows for teachers across all grade levels
and subject matters to work collaboratively with each other about how best to utilize the GAFE
software in the classroom. This training will allow for teacher leaders to emerge who will feel
comfortable helping other faculty and staff members who may be struggling. It allows for data to
be gathered and studied about the effectiveness it is having on student engagement and learning.
Teachers will be able to use this data to plan effective and differentiated lessons for their
classrooms. It will help teachers accomplish their ultimate goals and outcomes, student mastery
Evaluation for the Google Apps for Education – Faculty Training Grant will be
conducted using a faculty and student survey given at the end of the training process. All faculty
and staff will complete the survey upon completion of the training in December of 2017.
Students will be given a survey to complete in May of 2018. Since full implementation is not
expected of faculty and staff until January of 2018, this will give time for students to observe any
changes in their classrooms during the second half of the school year, after all faculty and staff
training is complete. (See Appendix C & D for faculty and student survey instruments)
Budget
The budget for the Google Apps for Education – Faculty Training grant requests funding
for nine substitutes for the three training days that will occur during normal school days. The
nine substitutes will allow the 40-member faculty to be divided in half and assigned to either a
morning or afternoon training session. Utilizing the current bell schedule and teacher planning
periods, the nine substitutes will be able to rotate and cover for the teachers and faculty members
attending their assigned training times. Currently in Bryan County, substitutes are paid a rate of
$80 per day. The budget also requests funding for printing costs to allow for booklets of training
