Overview or purpose: The main purpose of this lesson is to expose and teach the class

about what a symbol is and what some common American symbols are.

Time frame: 45 minutes, may need more time to finish the mobile (if so we will finish it

later)

Objective: The students will be able to give an example of what an American symbol is.
Students will be able to create mobile using different American symbols.

Phase one:

1. Begin by showing the students the cover of the book. Then read the title of the book to
the children. Have the students infer what the book might be about based on the cover
and title.
2. Begin reading the story, pausing throughout to ask questions.

Phase two:

Have small group discussions then bring it full class discussion.

3. Watch brain pop video on American symbols- 5 min

 As a class take the quiz at the end of the video to assess understanding and
comprehension of the book and video.

4. After reading the story and watching the video, ask the students to identify other
symbols of our country.
5. Have students as group sort different American symbols and just normal symbols (heart,
clover, etc ) then have each group come up as a group and sort them on the correct side
of the chart.

Phase three: Lastly, we will be making a mobile using some common American symbols. We
will talk about how these symbols are very important to our country. I will also tell them to
color appropriately because we are making our symbols look like the real American symbols
(eagles aren’t purple and the flag is red white and blue).

Accommodations for ELL/ SPED:

I will give more time to help students who need more time with fine motor issues. I will have
visuals to help students with connecting vocabulary to an image.
