Statistical Practice 1
Assignment 1
2017
DEADLINE:
• Wednesday 8th March 2017 (Week 2) 5:00pm
CHECKLIST
: Have you shown all of your working, including probability notation where
necessary?
: Have you given all numbers to 3 decimal places.
: Have you included all SPSS output and plots to support your answers where
necessary.
: Have you made sure that all plots and tables each have a caption.
: If before the deadline, have you submitted your assignment via the online
submission on MyUni?
: Is your submission a single word document or pdf file - correctly orientated,
easy to read? If not, penalties apply.
: Penalties for more than one document - 10% of final mark for each extra
document. Note that you may resubmit and your final version is marked,
but the final document should be a single file.
: If after the deadline, but within 24 hours, have you contacted us via the
enquiry page on MyUni and then submitted your assignment online via the
online submission on MyUni?
: Penalties for late submission - within 24 hours 40% of final mark. After 24
hours, assignment is not marked and you get zero.
: Assignments emailed instead of submitted by the online submission on MyUni
will not be marked and will recieve zero.

1. Revision of some mathematical concepts
This question may be handwritten. Remember to scan and attach to rest of
assignment.
(a) For the following calculate y.
i. y = 2 + 3x, x = 5.
[1 mark]
ii. y = 3x, x = 3
[1 mark]
iii. y = a + bx, a = 1, b = 4, x = 10
[1 mark]
x−a
iv. y = b
,x = 9, a = 1, b = 4
[1 mark]
(b) Calculate the following proportions.
i. A die is rolled 20 times and the number of 6s is 5.
[1 mark]
ii. Of 200 puppies advertised on Gumtree, 43 were free.
[1 mark]
(c) A hire car costs $100 for insurance and $2 per kilometre driven.
i. If the total cost is represented by y and the number of kilometres
driven is represented by x, write an equation of the form y = a + bx
that can be used to calculate the total cost.
[1 mark]
ii. If you drive 150km, what is the total cost?
[1 mark]
iii. If you sit in the car, but do not drive it, what is the total cost?
[1 mark]
[Total: 9]

2. Rat data in SPSS - Practical 1
This question must be typed up in Word
To measure the effects of ozone on weight, one group of 70-day-old rats was
kept in an environment containing ozone for 7 days. A second group of rats
of the same age (the control group) was kept in an ozone-free environment
for the same time. The weight gains (to the nearest gram) were as follows.
Control Group 41 26 13 -17 15 22 29 26 38 22 27 17
(n=23) 27 18 21 27 25 18 29 22 19 26 23
Ozone Group 10 7 -10 18 7 40 -15 -9 6 14 7
(n=22) -13 12 -16 44 20 16 28 14 16 55 -9

(a) i. What are the subjects? How many are there?

[2 marks]
ii. How many variables are there? What are they and what type of
variable is each one?
[4 marks]
(b) Enter the data directly into SPSS.
You do not need to give any output for this part in your assignment.
(c) What is the sample mean weight gain of all the rats?
[2 marks]
(d) What is the sample standard deviation of the weight gain of all the
rats?
[2 marks]
(e) What is the minimum and maximum weight gain of all the rats?
[3 marks]
(f) Produce a side-by-side box-plot of the weight gain for each group. In-
clude your captioned plot in your answer.
Captions should include three parts - (1) what type of plot it is. e.g. box-
plot / histogram etc, (2) the variables in the plot, and (3) the subjects.
[2 marks]
Using this plot, answer the following questions:

3
i. Which group has the highest median weight gain?
[1 mark]
ii. Which group has the largest IQR?
[1 mark]
iii. Are there any potential outliers? If so, how many are there; which
group are they in; and what are their weight gains?
[4 marks]
iv. Overall do you think that exposure to ozone causes weight gain or
weight loss in rats? Justify your conclusion.
[1 mark]
v. Presentation mark for typed up in Word
[1 mark]
[Total: 23]
3. Types of variables
This question may be handwritten
For each of the following: decide if the variable is quantitative or categorical.
If they are quantitative, are they discrete or continuous?
If they are categorical, are they nominal or ordinal?
(a) Number of zombies in the first 24 hours of the zombie apocalypse.
[2 marks]
(b) Daily maximum temperature in Adelaide.
[2 marks]
(c) Types of cocktails.
