MUNICIPAL MASS BLOOD LETTING ACTIVITY


Sept 16, 2010
General Objectives:

To Promote the Voluntary Blood Donation Program of the Department of Health and
providing for an adequate supply of blood and blood products of the municipality

Specific Objective:

1. The Municipality of La Trinidad will be able to donate one hundred fifty (150) bags of blood
on September 16, 2010.
2. The different Barangays, Municipal Employees and other stakeholders will be the one’s to
donate.

What is the advantage of blood donation “TO SAVE LIVES”

What is in it for me?


 It’s like changing oil in a car – results to a better blood circulation in the body. A person
can donate blood 4 x a year.
 To know if I am infected with blood related diseases such as Hepatitis B, HIV-AIDS,
Malaria and Syphilis.
 Boost self-worth because of helping other people.

GENERAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OF A BLOOD DONOR

 Age – 18-65 years old


 Weight – atleast50 kgs for a 500ml of donated blood.
 Blood pressure – between 90 and 60 systolic and 60 and 100 diastolic.
 Pulse rate – Between 60 and 100 beats/minute with regular rhythm.
 Hemoglobin – at least 125g/l
 For women – you can donate blood 1 week after your menstruation
 Male and female can donate blood.

Notes for the qualified donor:

 Must not have alcohol intake 24 hours before blood donation – Please do not drink
alcoholic beverage on September 15, 2010.
 Have a light meal. No special food is required. The only advice is to take in more fluids
and eat your usual and regular balanced diet.
 Have enough rest and sleep
WHO ARE DEFFERED TO GIVE BLOOD?

Temporary
• Has Had Blood Donation Less Than 3 months ago
• Has recently had tattoo session – Can donate blood after 1 year
• Tooth extraction – with in 72 hours
• Has had recent Surgical Operation – Major or Minor Surgery Can donate after 1 year
• Currently Pregnant
• Acute Fever

Permanent deferment
• Cancer
• Cardiac Disease
• Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C
• HIV infection, AIDS or Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD)
• High Risk Occupation (e.g. Prostitution)
• Unexplained weight loss of more than 5kg. over six months
• Chronic Alcoholism
• Diabetes on Insulin

STEPS ON HOW TO DONATE BLOOD

A. Before blood donation


 Fill up Donor’s form upon arrival at the blood collection site’
 Donor’s health history will be asked by a trained professional staff.
 Pre-donation education and counseling will be given by a trained professional staff.
 Donor’s weight ,blood pressure, pulse rate and temperature will be checked.
 Donor will be examined by a physician.
 Small sample of donor’s blood will be taken to check the blood type and hemoglobin.
Screening and selection procedure will usually take about 10-15 mins.Donor is encourage
to give accurate data for their own safety and that of the recipient.All information gathered will
be treated with utmost confidentiality.

B. During blood donation


 Donor will be asked to lie down on blood donor’s couch for blood collection which will
be done by a skilled phlebotomist.
 The amount of blood which will be taken will be determined by the physician.It will
depend mainly on donor’s body weight and does not exceed 450ml.
 This will take another 10-15 mins.

C. After Blood Donation


 Donor will be advised to rest for 10 more minutes.
 Beverage and simple snacks will be served.
 Post donation education and counseling will be given by a trained professional staff.
 Donor will be advised to drink more fluids.
 The volume of fluid taken is completely replaced by the body in 3 to 5 hours.
