Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis
Destination Saint Kitts and Nevis, officially: the Federation of Saint Christopher and Nevis, two
tropical islands in the caribbean sea and part of the leeward islands, are situated about 400 km east of
Puerto Rico. Formerly they belonged to a british colony in the west indies from 1882 to 1983, known
as saint christopher-nevis-anguilla.
The newest nations in the western hemisphere shares maritime borders with Antigua and Barbuda,
Netherlands (sint maarten), Venezuela, montserrat (united kingdom), and saint barthélemy (france).
The islands have a combined land area of 261 km², making it the smallest sovereign country in the
americas.
He twin-islands are of volcanic origin, high central peaks covered with tropical rainforest dominate
the landscape.
Highest peak is mount liamuiga on st. Kitts at 1,156 m.
Saint Kitts and Nevis has a population of 52,000 inhabitants. Capital city is Basseterre, founded in
1627 (not to be confused with Basse-Terre, the administrative capital of Guadeloupe). Spoken
languages are English (official) and Creole.
Brimstone Hill Fortress
The chief historic attraction on st. Kitts is Brimstone Hill Fortress. The UNESCO World Heritage
Site towers 230 m (750 ft) above the Caribbean, took 100 years to build, and is partially restored it is
of historical, cultural and architectural significance: a monument to the ingenuity of the british
military engineers who designed it and to the skill, strength and endurance of the African slaves who
built and maintained it. One of the best preserved historical fortifications in the Americas .Heritage
towers 230 m (750 ft) above the Caribbean, took 100 years to build, and is partially restored.
• Visitors from the United States and Canada only need proof of citizenship to enter the
island. Nationals of all other countries need a valid passport, and citizens of 96 countries do
not need a visa. An onward/return ticket and proof of sufficient funds may be required. The
government has dredged the main harbor on st. Kitts to accommodate cruise ships.
In 2002, approximately 67,531 tourists arrived on the islands. Over half of these visitors were
from the United States.
Mount Liamuiga and Black Rocks
• Not for the faint-hearted or the unfit, the steep hike to the crater of dormant volcano mount
Liamuiga rewards walkers with great views of neighbouring islands from st kitts' highest
point, at 1155m. Guided tours start in belmont estate and take about two hours each way.
Dramatic cliffs formed by the erupting volcano many years ago can be seen at black rocks,
near the village of saddlers. It's a breathtaking sight – despite the presence of cheap souvenir
and snack stalls.
Basseterre
The island's capital Basseterre (it was named by the French, meaning lower ground) has a relaxed,
slightly ramshackle appearance, with paint peeling from some of the fine Georgian buildings. The
main square – once the site of a slave market – was formerly known as Pall Mal l and the area around
the adjacent green clock tower and water fountain is known as Piccadilly Circus, or The Circus. While
it is difficult to spot many similarities with their namesakes, the Circus is as good a spot for people
watching as the London original.
