INTRODUCTION TO THE INDUSTRY

The communications time-line. If the whole history of human civilization was a

day, modern telecommunications (the telegraph and all that followed) would
only represent our last 30 seconds. That's how recent all of this has been. But
within that time-line, see how much has happened in that last half minute - and
how progress is still accelerating, second by second...
With the liberalization of the Telecommunications Industry and the introduction
of the New Telecom Policy, telecommunication industry in India, in the recent
couple of years has seen a welcoming growth in technology adoption and
implementation. With the convergence of voice, data, image and video, the
industry is adapting itself to provide integrated services. Businesses are being
redefined using a host of new telecommunications technology paradigms. With
the advent of Electronic Business using the Internet, organizations spend
considerable amount of financial resources in building a robust and secure
telecommunications environment to compete in the global market. It is crucial
for managers to understand different players in the Telecommunications
industry and the various emerging technologies. The managers of today have to
make strategic decisions on how to combine various telecommunication
technologies in a cost-effective way so that they can be used to enhance the
global competitive advantage of firms.

In India at present telephone density is about 1.9 per hundred population of the
country, which is much less compared to even some of the other developing
countries of the world. With the present growth rate of about 20 per cent, by the
end of 10th Plan (Year 2007), it is expected that the tele-density could reach
around only three per hundred population. Since the tele-density is low, there is
great potential for the growth of telephone demand with the accelerated growth
of economic activities. To meet this demand, as quickly as possible, National
Telecom Policy provides for private sector participation to supplement the
efforts of DoT in Basic Telephone Services. Opening up of the Basic Services
will be the biggest opportunity for the foreign investors.
International Telecommunications Union (ITU) statistics put the tele-density in
India in 1998 at just 2.2 lines per hundred people. However, more recent
Government of India figures put it at a higher 3.04, though it is still way below
the global rate of 13 lines. However it is more or less in line with the ITU
estimate of 3.3 for emerging economies. The growth in rural demand has
outstripped urban demand with telecom penetration in villages increasing in
multiples. Higher telecom dispersal is indicative of reduced economic
disparities, experts point out.
Tele-density in India is increasing rapidly and as stated in the NTP 1999, the
Government is committed to holding the rate to reach seven per cent (75 million
lines) by 2005 and 15 percent (175 million) by
2010. This will call for an estimated investment of around $ 37 billion
in the next four years and $ 69 billion between 2005 and 2010- say industry
experts. To a great extent the perceived linkage between communications,
information technology and growth has shaped the Indian telecommunications
policy, market perception and consequently industry activity. Access to
information infrastructure has been seen as a prerequisite not just to a robust
IT industry but also to broad based growth and competitiveness in all other
services and industries.
India operates one of the largest telecom networks in Asia and the 12th largest
in the world comprising of over 22,212 telephone exchanges, with a total
equipped capacity of 17.74 million lines and 14.54 million working telephones.
The Long Distance Transmission Network has nearly 1,65,000 route kilometers
of terrestrial Microwave Radio Relay & Co-axial cables and about 96,261
route kilometers of Optical Fiber Cables.

CellOne provides a number of Value Added Services. These services helps

BSNL serve you better & quality of communication thus bringing global
connectivity at your doorstep.

Though you may miss a call, you will never miss what the caller has to say with
CellOne Voicemail. It’s truly mobile voice mail.

CellOne Voice Mail Service ensures that the customers never miss their calls
even when their phone is busy, switched off, out of coverage, or the customer is
simply too busy to take the call. In such cases, CellOne VMS greets the caller
and records a message from the caller, which the customer can retrieve later at
his convenience from anywhere in the world. This is available to all our post-
paid customers.

It’s like having your very own, mobile personal secretary and answering
machine who listens to your incoming calls, greets the caller and stores the
caller and stores the messages left by the caller so that you can listen and call
them back later.

GETTING STARTED
In the beginning, when you start using your Voice mail serving, you have to
first activate your personal voice mail box by defining the conditions for
diverting the calls. First go from menu to call divert feature. You need to refer
to your handset manual as the process differs from the handset to handset. Your
handset will show you the four different conditions under which you can divert
your calls. You can choose any one of them.

• PHONE BUSY (whenever you receive a call on your mobile phone while
attending another call, it will get diverted to your VMS)

• NO REPLY (if you can’t or don’t want to answer a call, it is

automatically forwarded to your VMS after few seconds)

• NOT REACHABLE (if you are not in the BSNL coverage area or if your
handset is switched off, your call is diverted to your VMS)

• UNCONDITIONAL (in case you don’t wish to be disturbed, you can

divert all your calls to your VMS)

SMS

Mobile-to-mobile messaging is a revolutionary new means of communication

that allows Cellone mobile subscribes to send a short text message
instantaneously to any other mobile subscriber. You can type down the message
and send it to any mobile. The message can be of 160-character length
including spaces, punctuation and special characters.

The system sends the confirmation about the delivery of the message to the
sender as soon as the message is delivered. If the called number is busy or out
of coverage area, the system periodically monitors the status of the called
number and send the message as soon as it becomes active. BSNL provides
national and international SMS facility to its post and pre-paid customers at
very cheap price.

ROAMING
At Cellone, we believe you should be able to talk to whomever you want,
whenever you want and wherever you want. That’s why Cellone offers you
Roaming services designed to meet your needs. We thus make sure that you are
always just a phone call away from your near and dear ones. Your Cellone
number shall remain the same wherever you in Mumbai, Lucknow, London,
Paris or anywhere else in the world.

SEAMLESS ROAMING

Since your number is the same wherever you go, the will be forwarded to you.
So there will be no more missed calls. Further the caller does not require
STD/ISD facilities to call you, if the call is being made from within the service
area of your home network. All India roaming facility is available for both
post and pre-paid mobile customers.

INTERNATIONAL ROAMING

International roaming facility is available for Cellone subscribers for more

than network across the globe.

CALL FORWARDING

In case you are in a meeting or your cellphone is switched off, using the call
forwarding feature, you can forward your calls on a fixed line or a cell phone
where someone can see messages on your behalf. You can also forward an
incoming call while speaking to someone.

You can activate call forwarding either by using the menu function of your
cellphone or by using the codes mentioned alongside.

Use the menu function to scroll to call forwarding and activate for the
following options:

• All calls

• If busy

• If no reply
• If not reachable/switched off

All forwarded calls are billed the same way the regular call is billed. Calls that
are forwarded to the cellone voice mail, are not charged for airtime.

Introduction to Reliance
Reliance Infocomm is the outcome of the late visionary
Dhirubhai Ambani’s (1932-2002) dream to herald a digital
revolution in India by bringing affordable means of information
and communication to the doorsteps of India’s vast population.

“Make the tools of Infocomm available to people at an

affordable cost, they will overcome the handicaps of illiteracy
and lack of mobility”, Dhirubhai Ambani charted out the
