1 Introduction

1.1 Scope of the Manual

This instruction manual covers the installation and operation of Argus Technologies’ Fusible Battery Disconnect
panel.
NOTE: To aid the user with installation, frequent reference is made to drawings located at the rear of this manual.

1.2 Product Overview

The primary purpose of the Fusible Battery Disconnect panel is to allow battery service. The design provides for
safe removal of the 24 or 48Vdc power system connection from the battery string via a robust 1200 Amp
contactor. The panel is therefore commonly used for emergency shut off of the batteries.
Located on the front of the panel is a pull and release locking toggle switch; provided to control the contactor for
battery on-line or battery off-line.
Light emitting diodes (LED’s) provide indication of system status including battery on-line, battery off-line,
contactor closure, power on, low voltage disconnect (LVD) remote 1 and 2, and fuse fail (if so equipped).

Figure 1–Front angle view of the fusible battery disconnect panel

Located inside the panel, a key switch operates as a local lockout switch by controlling a relay circuit which
disconnects the power from the onboard control circuit to the rest of the PCB. This will remove the power from the
LED’s and the contactor coil. To ensure the safety of qualified personnel performing maintenance, the key switch
should be placed in the OFF position and the key removed to ensure the batteries are off-line.
Up to two remote control inputs, provided by the user, can be used to open the contactor remotely and take the
batteries off-line. This can be used to provide LVD functionality where the contactor is remotely controlled by a
DC power system controller/monitor that automatically disconnects the battery after an extended power outage
before damage to the battery occurs. Automatic reconnection will occur, after the power failure, initiated by the
power system controller/monitor. A common system example is where one remote disconnect is configured to
switch an individual battery string and another remote disconnect may be set for a group.
A remotely controlled emergency power off (EPO) switch operates in the manner of the key switch to positively
turn off the contactor.
An option for 400, 600 or 800 Amp fusing is provided for battery overload and short circuit protection. An indicator
fuse and a fuse fail LED is provided to monitor if the fuse opens.
The unit has top and bottom cable entry covers made from Lexan. The covers can be modified to suit to provide
cabling access to the system and provide protection from contact to the battery bus bars within.
The mounting flanges or “ears” provide the means to wall mount the cabinet vertically or horizontally. The ears
can be relocated to provide flush or offset mounting. 19” rack mounting is standard. 23” mounting is optional.

2.4 Battery fail monitor (optional)
The Argus SD08 Battery Fail Monitor module is designed to monitor the status of a single battery string. The
method used is ‘battery midpoint voltage monitoring.’ The SD08 connection to the battery string splits the battery
string voltage in half at the midpoint. The string voltage halves are compared and if the difference between the
two exceeds the programmed value (set by front panel rotary switch) then an alarm is sent to the Argus system
controller or directly to the customer’s office monitoring system via the contacts on a Form C relay. A local
latching alarm indication (red LED) is provided. Manual intervention is required to reset via a front panel push
button. Up to two SD08’s can be mounted on the front panel of the Argus Fusible Battery Disconnect panel.
Please see the SD08 manual (Argus #018-546-B2) for detailed information.

Batteries are hazardous to the environment and should be disposed of safely at a recycling facility. Consult the
battery manufacturer for recommended local authorized recyclers.
WARNING
Hazardous voltages are present at both the input and the output of power systems. Ensure that
input power and output power is removed before attempting work on the connections. Use a
voltmeter to verify the absence of voltage. Clearly mark the correct polarity of the battery leads
before commencing work on DC connections.
Refer to the previous (Installation) chapter for additional safety precautions.

5.2 System Voltage (Jumper Selection)

The Argus Fusible Battery Disconnect panel is designed for use in a 24 or 48Vdc power system. Jumpers J1 and
J2, located on the control circuit behind the unit’s front panel, must be set to correspond with the voltage of the
system.

5.3 Power and Battery Connections

WARNING: Ensure the correct polarity is used for all cable terminations.
Remove the Lexan (plexiglass) covers and cut out to fit cables as required.
Connect the panel to the building ground via the ground stud(s). Route the ground wire through the wire way
hole(s).
Connect the DC power from the power system to the system hot bar. Prepare the battery hot cable but do not
make final battery connection to the panel at this stage.

5.4 SD08 (optional) Connections

5.5 Alarm Connections
Two alarms are provided by jumper selectable Form A/B alarm contacts which are extended to terminal blocks
located on the control circuit behind the unit’s front panel. These relay contacts can be individually set to Normally
Open (NO) or Normally Closed (NC) by positioning jumpers located on the control circuit. The factory default
setting is Normally Closed (NC). Terminal blocks can accommodate wire sizes 2.5 to 0.34mm2 (#14 to #22 AWG).
These are fail-safe relays that are energized in normal operation. Therefore, under normal operating conditions
and for the factory default jumper position, the relay contacts are open (energized) and the relay contacts close
(de-energized) when an alarm occurs or power is removed from the battery disconnect.
NOTE: Normally Closed (NC) is the contact state when the alarm relay is energized. Relays are de-energized during an
alarm condition.
Connect two wires per alarm to the alarm connector terminal block/strip per drawing #020-615-08. Route via ¾”
wire ways and use tie wraps to secure to existing (factory) wire harness.

5.6 Control Connections

Connect control wires and power common (not building ground) to the control connector terminal block/strip per
drawing #020-615-08. Route via ¾” wire ways and use tie wraps to secure to existing (factory) wire harness.

5.6.1 Remote Control

Up to two remote control switches, provided by the user, can be used to open the contactor remotely thereby
taking the batteries off-line. These can be used to provide LVD functionality where the contactor is remotely
controlled by a DC power system controller/monitor to automatically disconnect the battery after an extended
power outage before damage to the battery occurs. Automatic reconnection will occur, when power is restored,
initiated by the system controller/monitor. A common system example, shown in drawing #020-615-08, is that one
input is used for individual battery string disconnect control and the other is used for group battery disconnect
control.
For -48V and -24V systems connect Remote Hot to –Remote (1 and 2). Connect +Remote (1 and 2) to remote
control devices which when closed connect these inputs to power common.
For +24V systems connect Remote Hot to +Remote (1 and 2). Connect –Remote (1 and 2) to remote control
devices which when closed connect these inputs to power common.
The Remote Hot can be powered either from the battery or system power input. Place jumper P5 in the 1-2
position of J5 for battery powering or 2-3 position of J5 for system powering. Normally battery power (jumper
position 1-2) is used for remote control. This is the factory default.

5.6.2 EPO Control

A remotely controlled emergency power off (EPO) switch operates as a lockout by controlling a relay, which
disconnects the power to the onboard control circuit PCB. This removes the power from the LED’s and the
contactor coil.
A number of remote Emergency Power Off (EPO) switches (normally closed for normal operation) can be
connected in series to affect remote power off function for a number of battery disconnects.
Remove the jumper between the EPO+ and EPO– input for each battery disconnect. Connect the EPO switches
in series and to the EPO+ and EPO– inputs. If more than one battery disconnect is connected to the same EPO
switch(s), assure that all EPO+ are connected together and all EPO– are connected together.

5.6.3 Power Common

Connect to the power system common (grounded side of the rectifier plant).

Verify Remote 1 and/or Remote 2 control inputs operation, if connected, by applying the appropriate remote
disconnect signal.
Verify EPO operation, if connected, by opening one of the EPO switches.
If the battery disconnect panel fails to perform as indicated above, refer to factory service information listed at the
back of this manual for technical support.

6.2 Battery Initial Charge Procedure

After installation of batteries it is usually necessary to initial charge the batteries to ensure proper operation and to
eliminate plate sulfating. Follow guidelines supplied with battery and record initial charge readings; i.e., specific
gravity, cell voltage, charge current and temperature.
NOTE: Battery warranty may be void if batteries are not initially charged following the manufacture’s guidelines and if
proper records are not kept.
Some VRLA batteries do not require initial charging if placed on charge within three to six months of manufacture.
Check with the manufacturer. After the equalization period, battery voltage should be reduced to the
recommended float level.

6.3 Normal Mode of Operation

Normal operation of the panel will be indicated by the illumination of the BATTERY ON LINE, CONTACTOR
CLOSED, and POWER ON LED’s glowing green and the absence of illumination of the remaining LED’s; e.g.,
FUSE FAIL, if equipped.

7 Maintenance
Although very little maintenance is required with Argus systems, routine checks and adjustments are
recommended to ensure optimum system performance. Qualified service personnel should do repairs.
The following table lists a few maintenance procedures for this system. These procedures should be performed at
least once a year.
WARNING: HIGH VOLTAGE AND SHOCK HAZARD.
Use extreme care when working inside the unit while the system is energized.
Do not make contact with live components or parts.
Circuit cards, including RAM chips, can be damaged by static electricity. Always wear a grounded
wrist strap when handling or installing circuit cards.
Ensure redundant modules or batteries are used to eliminate the threat of service interruptions
while performing maintenance on the system’s alarms and control settings.

Procedure Date Completed

Clean ventilation openings
Inspect all system connections (re-torque as necessary)
Verify alarm/control settings
Verify alarm relay operation

8 Argus Conventions

8.1 Numbering System

Argus Technologies uses an eight-digit drawing number system, which is broken into three blocks. The first three
digits describe the category of the product; e.g., rectifier or fuse panel. The next three digits indicate the sequence
in which the product number was allocated in a particular category. The last two digits indicate the type of
drawing, for example:
“-06” Outline Drawing
“-08” Customer Connections
“-20” Main Assembly
Argus uses an eight-digit part numbering system for all components and sub assemblies. Each part is covered by
its own unique number. Due to the quantity, categories will not be listed within this manual.
