I began my on-the-job training last June 1, 2017 in the company of ASC Global
Recruitment which is a subsidiary company of Drake Internationals. OJT serves as an opportunity
for students or trainees to take a glimpse into the world of business. This is the time where students
learn, but instead of learning in the classroom, it is learning at the place of work while doing the
actual job. And this is done with a supervisor or an experienced employee who serves as the course
instructor using hands-on training supported by classroom training.
On my first day, I was welcomed with greetings and smiles. I was introduced to almost all
employees and they all seem approachable and friendly. I was then given a table in which it was
actually the desk of the Accounting Liaison Officer, and that was where I was placed until the end
of my training. Personally, I have worked at another company and I can say that I really like the
environment in my current company. There are more than five people my age and some employees
are close to my age which makes it more comfortable to talk to. Rules and regulations were
explained to me on the first day including the appropriate attire, who is allowed to enter each
station, what are the food allowed to bring, and etc.
Ms. Pineda is the accounting supervisor while Ms. Divillareal is the accounting specialist.
They are both my bosses, they are the ones who supervise me and tell me what I should work on.
Ms. Pineda first showed me the relationships of all companies under Drake, what is the focus of
ASC. She then briefly explained to me the expenses and revenues of the company. Usually, Ms.
Pineda works from home so Ms. Divillareal was the one who gave me the tasks. She taught me
how to use the Xero system which is an accounting software for small and medium-sized
businesses. In that system is where all the records and books of the company are placed. I was
taught how to make reports and encode entries in the system. It was quite difficult to finish some
of my assigned work because I wasn’t given a laptop that time and it was handed to me when there
is only 2 days left for me to work there. Every time the supervisor or specialist arrives at work late
or is absent, I grab the opportunity to use the desktop for me to finish the assigned tasks- in which
I was permitted to use. I mostly spent my time filing check vouchers and liquidation reports from
the filing cabinet. While I was working there, I became very observant because I want to ask and
learn. I noticed the Accounting Liaison Officer always leaves and it is because it is his job to take
care of the checks to be brought to the banks, and other documents for other companies. I
experienced updating books and depositing cash and checks in the bank as I was sent by the
accounting specialist. What I appreciate in my OJT in ASC is that in every task I was assigned to
do, it was explained to me why and what is the purpose of my task.
It is normal of employees to become very busy especially on the last week of the month
but they still make time to teach me or give me the information I need to understand. I can say that
I really am guided and I can see the effort of the accounting department and other employees in
helping me understand the operations and cycles for my thesis. Time really is essential. I find it
challenging for me to talk to other departments to interview about the operations per department
so I set a schedule with them and fortunately, they agree despite their busy schedule. I study at
home about the purpose and function of each department and there I create my questions while
also basing from the AIS book by James Hall. I was challenged every time I was assigned to do a
certain task because I am actually afraid of committing a mistake but my supervisors were really
approachable and they taught me the right way if I make a mistake but let me do the work by
myself first so I can use what I’ve learned at school. I also appreciate the care and concern they
give me because every time eat late for lunch because I’m finishing something, they tell me to stop
and eat first and whenever I stay at work late, they tell me to go home because it will be dangerous
for me to go home very late alone and that there is always tomorrow. I may not have experienced
all the work of an accountant that I may be experiencing in the future, but in my stay in ASC I can
say that I have learned a lot.
In my on-the-job training, I didn’t just gain more knowledge but I gained friendship. I’ve
met people who help me even when they have plenty of more important things to do. They didn’t
make me feel like an intern but like a friend. They never displayed their rank, status or position,
they always invite me to eat and share food with them and even outside the office premises we
bond together. The experience helped me apply what I have learned in class in the corporate world.
It made me view myself as a real accountant someday. I can say that I have appreciated my work
more and I am even more excited when it is my time to work in the future especially if it is with
people like them.
