Employee’s Supporting Documentation for Nomination Gracie Otin
Thank you card received from a student – Wanda Kelly
Miss Gracie, I am very grateful to you for the help you have rendered me during my education at Galveston College. Your brilliant ideas helped shape my papers, and I was able to be successful because of people like you. For example, you spent many hours going over my papers with me, and I learned a lot during these sessions. You also directed me to helpful resources which helped me get on track with my academic pursuit. Many students at GC recognize you as an expert in many areas since you are capable, confident and committed to the mission of the college. I sincerely appreciate you, and may God bless you and your family. Sincerely, Wanda. Galveston College Vision: “A beacon of light guiding life-long learning” Since technology continues to change, spreading digital fluency is now the core responsibility of academic libraries such as GC library. Being part of this initiative allows me to provide students with 24/7/365 days access to the resources they will need to launch successfully into the college life. In addition, it allows me to meet each student at his or her point of need from those who are struggling to those seeking greater academic challenges or wanting to enrich their learning. That is the reason I am also I am involved in the following programs because these are the future students of Galveston College: SMART Family Literacy -In addition to collaborating and cooperating with all the units, I build alliances with those others who contribute to student growth in different ways. SMART Family Literacy is dedicated to education for young children and their families through innovative hand- on-activities in science, math art, reading and technology. Last year 2017, 20,230 books were given to children. Some of the children who receive the service are children of Galveston College students who are pursuing education to make better lives for themselves and for their children. Delta Kappa Gamma (DKG) – Omicron chapter in Galveston. DKG is dedicated to education of young women. As a volunteer in this group, we raise funds for scholarship to high school graduating seniors who are transferring to 2 year colleges and 4 year Universities to complete their education. 3 girls received scholarships to attend Galveston College prior to transferring to various universities and 1 girl to University of North Texas. Last year we coordinated with other areas affected by Hurricane Harvey to facilitate the process of getting supplies/donations to families. Galveston Reads – One Book One City program is volunteer-driven in which I participate. The program provides an opportunity for all citizens including GC community to participate in reading. As a programming and Readers’ committee member, I assist in organizing events that are held on GC campus which involve all sectors of the campus community i.e. students’ panel and instructors panel discuss different aspects of the book, and the author visit is the culmination of the events on GC campus.
