Keep Your Feet in Super Shape

Tips From the Professionals to Ensure Healthy, Pain-Free Feet
Your feet are an essential part of your well-being. Treat your feet well and they
will reward you accordingly. Here are some essential tips to keep your feet
healthy, pain-free, and in super shape.
1. Keep your feet clean and dry. Check your feet regularly for any abnormal color or
skin problems.
2. Keep your feet moisturized with a good moisturizer to keep the skin soft, moist
and healthy.
3. Check for fungus. If you discover fungus on your feet, a professional should take
a look and recommend a treatment option.
4. Inspect toenails weekly. Trim
and shape as necessary. Cut your
toenails straight across to help avoid
ingrown toenails. Smooth nail edges
with an emery board or nail file.
5. If you experience foot pain do not
ignore it at all. Discomfort in your
feet is not normal and should be
looked at by a professional. If you
do have a foot issue, the quicker it
is identified and cured, the better.

Your feet are so important to your health and

well-being that it’s worth learning how best
to look after them and avoid foot pain.
Remember to focus on prevention rather
than cure, so treat early, treat well
and reap the long-term benefits.

Be Safe... Medicine Tips for Seniors
As people grow older, needing a prescription
medicine is almost as inevitable as gray hair and
reading glasses. Two-thirds of all seniors take at least
one medication each day, and 25 percent take three or
more. Many seniors owe their lives – or at least their
lifestyles – to medications, but the remedies can also
carry serious risks.
Seniors are especially vulnerable to the effects of
prescription drugs. This age group take more drugs
than any other group and are more sensitive to the
effects of medication. Each year more than 9 million
Americans suffer side effects or have a negative
reaction to medication. Here are a few simple steps
to help you take the danger out of your drugs.
• What are the possible dangers from your medication?
Understand the risks. Read the warning labels on all over-the-counter
medications, Ask your doctor about the side effects of all your prescriptions.
or if your medications can interact with each other. Drug interactions are a
serious concern for seniors. According to the Council on Family Health,
almost 40 percent of all drug reactions reported each year involve people
over 60. Make sure your doctor knows about every prescription and
nonprescription drug you are taking, including herbal remedies, nutritional
supplements and daily multivitamins.

• How to take your medications safely.

• Follow your doctor’s directions exactly.
Make sure you understand how and when
to take all your medications.
• If you have trouble reading labels, ask for
large-print type on your prescription labels. A
magnifying glass and a bright light can also help.
• Develop a system for keeping track of your medications.
Start your day by sorting your medications into
separate dishes, one for morning pills and one for
evening pills.
• Keep taking a drug until your doctor says it’s time to quit.
Stopping when you “feel better” can lead to unforeseen
complications.
• Check the expiration dates on your medicine bottles and
throw out anything that’s past its prime.
• Contact your doctor if you experience any side effects --
including dizziness, constipation, nausea, sleep changes,
diarrhea, incontinence, blurred vision, mood changes, or a
rash – after taking a drug.
• Obtain a copy of your complete medical record to give to
any new doctor or specialist you see. Be sure to remind
them about any medications, chronic conditions, and
allergies to medications of which you’re aware.

HEALTHY TABLE
Delicious Ways to Add
Omega-Oils to Your Meals
Foods for a healthy lifestyle can be full of great
flavor. The traditional Mediterranean diet is a wonderful
example of great food that can have a healthy impact on
the body.
The Mediterranean diet is characterized by daily
consumption of olive oil, fish, fruits, vegetables,
legumes, nuts and whole grains. It encourages eating
fewer processed foods and reducing consumption of
meat, a common source of Omega-6 fatty acids.
Everyone needs Omega-6 and Omega-3 essential
fatty acids because our bodies don’t produce them. But
it’s important to keep them in the right balance to each
other. The Mediterranean Diet helps achieve that balance by focusing on using olive oil instead of
vegetable cooking oils that are high in Omega-6.
These recipes for Chicken Marsala, Red Beet and Blood Orange Salad, and Black Bean,
Edamame and Wheat Berry Salad make it easy to set a healthy table everyone will be happy to sit
down to.

Mowing a yard that is one-third of

Remember to breathe correctly.

Get Started With Meditation

Daily meditation can create a sense

of calm in our hetic lives. Learning
how to meditate for 20 minutes a day
can also have a huge impact on your
physical health.
To meditate you will need to break
away from the world. Turn off your cell
phone and pager, shut down the computer and turn on the answering machine. There
should be no interruptions during this special time.
Meditation is the perfect antidote for the constant intrusion of technology in our lives.
In fact, recent research has shown that meditating twice per day for about 20 minutes can
actually reduce blockages in your blood vessels, significantly lowering the risk of
sudden death by heart attack or stroke.
These techniques are meditation practices rather than meditation itself, practice will
help you achieve the state of meditation. One person might
practice meditation for years to achieve a meditative state
of being while an experienced meditator might meditate for
an hour to achieve moments of meditative consciousness.
The Benefits of Meditation Are Subtle
You may not feel instant peace and calmness when
practicing meditation, its effects will become apparent to
you later, when you may notice that you responded to a
crisis with uncharacteristic calmness, or failed to get
“triggered” in a situation that would normally disturb you.
3 Basic Ways to Practice Meditation
Follow your breath - Exhale strongly a few times to
clear the base of the lungs of carbon dioxide.
Observe an icon or object: Allow your mind to rest lightly on the object. Allow your
attention to sit there, quietly and peacefully.
Recite a mantra - A mantra means “that which protects the mind.” So reciting a
mantra protects you with spiritual power. It is also said that when you chant a mantra,
you are charging your breath and energy with the energy of the mantra.

Here are a few tips to get you started:

• Where...?

Seniors Are Healthier
And More Active
Seniors are more physically active than many people think, says a
surprising new survey. The survey was commissioned by health benefits
company Humana Inc. and the SilverSneakers® Fitness Program.
Of those polled, 97% say
they are in good, very good
or excellent health and 45%
consider themselves above
average in physical fitness.
Respondents believe that
exercising helps improve and
maintain their health and
fitness levels, with 42%
noting that they look or feel
better as a result of physical
activity.
However, vanity as much
as wellness may be a
driving force — and the
search for six-pack abs
does not end after one’s
50th birthday.
The survey also
revealed that 74% of seniors exercise at
least three days a week and 33 % exercise at least five
days a week. Nearly half (46%) have been exercising for more than five
years, demonstrating a long-term commitment to physical activity.
Of those surveyed, half prefer to walk or power walk to get their exercise,
and, if given free time to do any physical activity, 39% say they’d take a
long walk. Nearly half (47%) like to exercise outdoors, while 40% prefer
working out at home and 43% like to exercise alone.

Other key findings of the survey include:

• 17% say they’ve lost weight since becoming
more active; 34% say their body feels better
• 53% say that a lack of interest, motivation
or time prevents them from being more active
• 61% say they started exercising because
they wanted to look or feel good
• Only about 15% said it was because of a
doctor’s warning (5%) or an immediate health
concern (9%)
• Less than 1% said it was because they were
re-entering the dating scene
• 67% exercise today to improve their health
or maintain their fitness/health level
• 44% say their personal belief is what keeps
them going
• Only 7% say it was their children, doctor or
a friend that motivated them
• 22 % say they’d take an adventure vacation, go kayaking or canoeing if
given free time to do something physically active.

FOCUS ON THE 50’s

What’s in
Store for
Younger
Boomers?
As they edge toward and
through their 50s, younger baby
boomers are experiencing both
tough challenges and new
opportunities. Longer life spans
and a deep desire to remain
relevant and youthful mean that
boomers can look forward to a
variety of lifestyles in their
older years.
At the same time, younger Many baby boomers are exercising more, extending their
boomers may be saddled with life expectancy and forestalling the onset of old age.
commitments to two generations
— their children as well as their aging parents. This reality can place
limits on their resources and freedom. Here is a brief look at some of the
issues facing the youngest boomers as they move into the latter phase of
middle age.

Family matters
Changing family dynamics have also brought up new issues. Since
large numbers of boomers started having families later in life, many still
have children living at home when they approach retirement age and may
also be devoting time and resources to the care of aging parents. In
addition, rising numbers of adults are choosing to move back to their
family homes due to job loss or difficulty securing that first job after
college, meaning a delay in “emptying the nest.” With nests no longer
being empty, scaling down and selling the large family home is being
postponed, along with retirement and other “golden years” activities.

To your health
Boomers are enjoying longer, active life spans and are determined to
forestall the onset of old age. At the same time, studies show that many
younger boomers will experience serious illnesses earlier in life than past
generations and will remain in the work force past retirement age in order
to keep their coverage.

Working retirement
Many young boomers are taking a hard look at semi-retirement. They
envision an active retirement and see it as a new way of working, rather
than a retreat from the world of work. Volunteering is also seen as part
of that active retirement, fulfilling a need to contribute and continue
feeling vital.

Maintaining a Strong,
Intimate Relationship
Maintaining the spark in a years-long relationship has its challenges. Particularly in
this day and age, spouses sometimes only see each other for a few hours a day between
work, meetings, kids and other obligations.
Letting your relationship languish can have dire consequences. The worst-case
scenario might be separation, but even if things don’t go that far, partners can start to
feel alienated, alone and unloved. Problems really start when frustration builds up, but
doesn’t get voiced, and when subjects that are hard to talk about are left unattended.
These issues are only compounded when one partner has a medical problem or health
issues. Dealing with health problems can try even the most patient and loving
relationships, though no one is to blame. To keep your relationship’s flame burning,
consider ways that you can re-connect.

Save the date

Don’t just settle for the few hours a day that you already see each other. Schedule time
when you can spend quality time together and stick to it - no excuses. If you haven’t
been seeing eye-to-eye lately, try doing something that requires input and cooperation
from both partners. Try cooking a healthy, beautiful meal together from scratch - ask
each other to do taste tests, set a candlelit table and linger over the dinner that you’ve
made for (and with) each other. If you’re able to do something more active, consider
canoeing, simulated rock-climbing or renting a tandem bicycle - you’ll literally be your
partner’s backup.

Get away from it all

Take a vacation from it all, but don’t leave the intent to reconnect at home. Go to a place
where you’ll be able to focus on each other, and where you’ll feel comfortable talking
about your relationship. Know what makes you come out of your shell - maybe you feel
more comfortable holding hands on a quiet beach, or maybe you feel a stronger
connection with your partner when you have to work together to find your way through
a new place.

Bring in reinforcements
You might feel alone in losing the spark in your relationship, but that could not be further
from the truth. If you’re suffering from medical problems, look for related support
groups where you can connect with other individuals
and couples who are facing similar issues. They
might have insights that you can benefit
from, and you might just be able to help
someone else. You might also seek out
a couples’ counselor who can help set
you on a path to reconnection, or
consult your doctor
for support.
