This booklet provides information on the joint Safety
Committee in our factory and what the Committee
does to make the factory safe.

What is the Safety Committee?

It is a group of workers and managers from our

factory who meet regularly to help ensure our factory
remains a safe place to work.

Who is on the Safety Committee?

There are an equal number of workers and

managers on our Safety Committee.

The workers on the Safety Committee are

selected by the workers and represent all
workers in the factory.

The managers on the Committee are selected

by the management.

All Committee members have an equal voice

and an equal role to play in making our
workplace safe.

What does the Safety Committee do?

The Safety Committee does many things.

For example, it:

conducts inspections of our factory to look for

safety and health problems

responds to employees’ complaints and

suggestions about safety and health

makes rules and policies about safety and health

in the factory

surveys workers and managers to learn about

safety and health problems in the factory

reviews company accident reports to learn how

such accidents can be prevented

communicates regularly about safety and health

issues to workers

meets regularly, at least once every three months,

and more often as needed.

Why do we have a Safety Committee?

The Safety Committee is important because:

The Safety Committee is our best guarantee that

safety and health problems will be taken seriously
here at our workplace, and that those problems
will be identified and fixed.

The Committee is effective because all

employees at our workplace – managers and
workers, from all areas of the factory – have a real
voice in the committee’s work.

It is a ‘joint’ effort – workers and managers working

TOGETHER to find solutions to the safety and health
problems at our workplace.

What are some benefits of the

Safety Committee?

The most obvious benefit is simple: the Committee

means we can identify and fix safety and health
problems quickly and efficiently, without having to
wait for outside parties or the government to do
that for us.

That means our workplace is made safer, and

we are safer. Besides that, there are other benefits.
The Safety Committee can:
Focus attention on safety and health issues and
problems, communicate to all workers about
those problems, and also get information from
workers about problems.
Show a commitment, by management and
workers, to having a safe workplace.
Make the company more efficient by making it
safe and free of accidents.

How can I get involved in the work of the

Safety Committee?

We can all help make the Safety Committee effective

and useful by learning more about the committee
and participating in the Safety committee’s work.
Some specific ways to do this include:

Make suggestions or complaints to the Safety

Committee about safety problems you see.
Express your interest to become a member.
Ask how worker members are chosen in
your factory.
Attend Safety Committee trainings and
presentations.
Suggest training or safety programs that you
would like to see done by the Committee.
