STEP 1
Attach the two pieces of ¾” plywood for the headboard using ¾” pocket holes and 1 ¼” pocket
hole screws. Attach the 2x4 frame around the plywood headboard with 1 ¼” pocket hole
screws, making sure to leave at least a ¾” inset space so that the 1x3 headboard chevron planks
will sit flush or slightly inset in Step 3. Taper and miter the 2x4s as shown.

STEP 2
Add the 1x3 supports to the headboard with wood glue and 1 ¼” brad nails.

STEP 3
Find the center of the headboard and draw a line to split up the headboard into four quadrants.
Measure, mark, and cut the angled 1x3 boards to fit. I recommend using these measurements
only as a guide and cutting your pieces to fit. Cut the ends at a 45º angle. Notice that while
most of the boards are trapezoids, a few are parallelograms.

STEP 4
First build the side rails by drilling ¾” pocket holes in the plywood and attaching it to the 2x4
rails with 1 ¼” pocket hole screws. Be sure to drill pocket holes horizontally, facing the
footboard to attach the feet in the next step. Drill ¾” pocket holes in the plywood and 1 ½”
pocket holes in the 2x4s. Attach the side rails to the headboard. I recommend using metal bed
rail brackets so you can disassemble the bed, if necessary.

STEP 5
Taper the feet as shown, then attach it to the side rails. Use 2 ½” pocket hole screws and wood
glue.

STEP 6
Build the footboard by drilling ¾” pocket holes in the plywood and attaching it to the 2x4 rail
with 1 ¼” pocket hole screws. Then attach the footboard to the side rails with metal bed
brackets.

STEP 7
Attach the side rail “planks.” Cut the 1x3s at about 80” then cut at random lengths, staggering
placement to achieve a “planked” look. Use wood glue and 1 ¼” brad nails to attach 1x3s to the
plywood.

STEP 8
Attach the footboard “planks.” Cut the 1x3s at about 62” then cut at random lengths,
staggering placement to achieve a “planked” look. Use wood glue and 1 ¼” brad nails to attach
1x3s to the plywood.

STEP 9
Attach the 2x2 mattress slat supports to the side rails with 2 ½” wood screws and wood glue.

STEP 10
Attach support feet to middle support board with 2 ½” wood screws then attach to bed frame
with 1 ½” pocket holes and 2 ½” pocket hole screws. Do not use wood glue if you intend to
disassemble this bed in the future.

STEP 11
Attach mattress slats to slat supports and middle support with 1 ¼” wood screws. Do not use
wood glue if you intend to disassemble this bed in the future.
