1. Technology Operations and Concepts
• Students demonstrate a sound understanding of technology concepts, systems, and operations.
Materials:
• Microsoft Word- any version
• Electronic White Board
• Computer
• Projector (if needed)
Activity:
• Week 1- Introduce Microsoft Word:
• Show how to open/close the program from their desktop
• Depending on the version of Word you are using, give your students the grand tour of the menu or ribbon.
• Demonstrate how to type words, change font, and indent. For this intro they need not to worry about spelling or
grammatical errors.
This week’s Intro Lesson:
1. With Microsoft Word open at each student’s computer, have them type in his or her first and last name. You may have
to remind students at this grade to use the shift key to make the first letter in their first and last name capital.
2. Have them highlight their name by clicking and dragging the cursor over what they have typed. In the menu/ribbon,
instruct the students to change the font size to 20, the style to Arial, make it bold and select a color of his or her choice.
3. If time permits, have them hit the enter key twice and type and finish this sentence “My favorite color is .”.
4. Show your students how to save this document in the location that you desire. Save it as 1LessonWord.

Session 1:
Do Introductions - Introduction to the computer lab teacher, discuss what we will do in the lab. Spend time getting to know the
students.
Review of Typing Stage 1: Demonstrate how to use Dance Mat Typing stage one, level one (ASDF, JKL; and G, H). Review the
home row and proper finger technique.
Assign Typing Practice Stage 1 - 3:
Assign 3 Minutes of: Typing Rocket Jr. Type with both hands, try to get a final score of 60 points or more.
Assign: Keyboard Climber 2. Type with both hands. Finish level two.
Microsoft PowerPoint- Introduce and Review program interface. Explain how to navigate to PowerPoint file(s). Students will create
a 4 slide PowerPoint about dinosaurs. They will research facts about dinosaurs and combine them with dinosaur images, sounds and
motion effects.
1. Hurricanes and Tornadoes- Students research on the internet to find interesting facts about hurricanes and tornadoes. Students
find several images related to hurricanes and tornadoes. Students use their research and images to create an informative 3 slide
PowerPoint presentation.
2. Then and Now - Students create a PowerPoint to compare objects they use now to objects their parents or grandparents used in
the past to do the same things. Students search clipart in PowerPoint to show two objects in their parents or grandparents used
in daily life. Students describe what each object is and what each object is and what it is used for.

Excel Tutorial:
Use this mini excel tutorial to guide your students in entering the data and creating the chart.
1. Type your title "Caleb's Party Food Chart" in Cell B1, then Enter.
4. Select (highlight) the food labels and number values in columns A and B.
6. Double click the chart and then choose "chart layouts" on the ribbon. Choose a chart layout.
The second graders are introduced to the world of Microsoft Excel by making a Gingerbread House! The students followed
coordinates and used the fill bucket to fill in the cells of Excel. They also learned to save their files! Check out a sample gingerbread
house below:

Student Activity
Lab Manager gives a quick overview of PowerPoint tools (focus on New Slide, Inserting Text, Inserting Images).
Water Cycle Project: Lab Managers will walk students through the process of creating a PowerPoint document using clip-art (or
images from the internet), text tools, and arrows (shape tools) to illustrate the Water Cycle. Have the students save their Water Cycle
PowerPoint to the desktop of the computer so that they are familiar with the Saving process.
