HOW IT ALL BEGAN

RBS 70 development studies started over
40 years ago. By 1978 Generation 1 was
in service with an effective intercept range
against incoming targets of 5 km, and
altitude coverage of more than 2,000 m.
1982 saw the second generation RBS 70
developed with increased area coverage
and by 1990, the third generation
was introduced. In 2003, the fourth
generation presented a major capability
enhancement, entering the digital era with
non-cooled laser diodes (No Freon), the
BOLIDE all-target missile, BORC Thermal
Imager, Digital IFF Interrogator, Target Data
Receiver, PC-based Weapon Simulator and
external power supply.

FEATURES
The RBS 70 NG VSHORAD system utilises state-of-the-art components and
technology to provide a highly integrated, modular air defence system.
NEW GENERATION SIGHTING
At the core of the RBS 70 NG is the new
generation sight module. The combination of
features in the sighting system means that
the RBS 70 NG can pick up all targets, day
and night. With its integrated high resolution
thermal imager and night sight capability,
it can be used around the clock, for true
24/7 operation.
Three dimensional target designation and
automatic target detection improves reaction
times. The auto-tracker aids the operator
during engagement, increasing hit probability
throughout the missile range. All RBS 70 NG
automatic functions can be manually
overridden at any time. The system also
has improved coarse aiming indicators.

The interface graphics are custom definable.
They are menu-based and there is an optional
login procedure available. The RBS 70 NG’s
new ILS Concept is based on the Maintenance
Support Computer (MSC), a rugged portable
PC with dedicated OBELISK software.
Key features include version control, logging,
test and fault finding, software download and
configuration & calibration.
The NG sight has been specifically designed
for a high degree of flexibility and modularity:
in addition to the Man-Portable Air Defence
System (MANPADS) configuration, the
same NG sight unit can be used in remote-
controlled or vehicle applications.
MODULAR DESIGN
The modular design of the RBS 70 NG
allows for integration into an almost unlimited
number of platforms and networks. It can
either be fully integrated into a C3I system
via a weapon terminal or operated as an
autonomous firing unit.
Specifically aimed at the long-term static
air defence of strategic assets and high-
profile events, these deployments can last
several weeks or more in around-the-clock
operations. The RBS 70 NG can also be
vehicle integrated and used to support
manoeuvring troops.
Due to its modular design, it can reuse all
existing generations of RBS 70 missiles up
to the new BOLIDE 4th generation all-target
VSHORAD missile.
ALL-TARGET CAPABILITY
The BOLIDE missile ensures the RBS 70 NG
is aimed at the complete threat spectrum
from fixed and rotary wing aircraft down to
small targets such as cruise missiles and
UAVs. The RBS 70 NG has an effective
intercept range of 8 km, with altitude
coverage in excess of 5,000 m.
The combined shaped-charge and pre-
fragmented warhead makes the system
uniquely capable of defeating armoured air
targets such as attack helicopters and CAS
aircraft as well as armoured ground targets
like APCs.
TRAINING
The RBS 70 NG reduces training time on the
engagement procedures to a few hours using
a dedicated classroom trainer. The classroom
training simulator incorporates operator drills
to perform training of all necessary skills such
as target acquisition and identification, target
tracking, weapon launch and guidance.
Outdoor training is performed with the
system, which is supported by a recording
function for After-Action Review.

UNJAMMABLE
The RBS 70 NG is an accurate, unjammable
missile system. It is unaffected by
countermeasures, heat sources and clutter,
so you can engage, intercept and hit your
target, whatever and wherever it may be.
The RBS 70 NG is uniquely capable of
operating in a complex environment such
as urban terrain and can be used in tropical,
desert and arctic conditions.

TESTIMONIAL:
RBS 70: TRIED AND TESTED
On 15 December 2004, the Czech Republic
signed a contract for the delivery of
RBS 70 MANPADS, as well as a quantity
of Bolide missiles.
The contract included an associated logistics
package involving the training of Czech
maintenance personnel and instructors, the
setting up of a lecture room and a supply of
test equipment. The RBS 70s were assigned
to 25 Protiletadlová Raketová Brigade (25th
Anti-Aircraft Missile Brigade), which was set
up at Strakonice in 2004.

Brigade, reveals why the Czech Republic
Army is satisfied with the RBS 70 system:

and multinational military exercises and live
firings. We’ve had no failures since the Czech
Republic bought the system.”
The service aspect to the contract was
critical. Training and testing were both vital
to ensuring that the system was integrated
smoothly and efficiently into the force’s
operations. Captain Suchy goes on to
explain his satisfaction with these elements
of delivery:

SCENARIO:
SEE EVERYTHING
– MISS NOTHING
A hostile military offensive is close at hand and
an Air Defence Battery has been tasked with
protecting an urban area from aerial threats
to secure the movement of their own troops
during an operation in the city.
A reduced team of three from the RBS 70 NG
squad EchoBravo advance to a rooftop
location carrying the MANPADS equipment
on their backs.
With intelligence suggesting multiple threats are
already on their way, the team must prepare in
minimal time. They deploy the weapon and it is
ready for launch in less than 60 seconds.
As soon as it is set up, the RBS 70 NG
indicates that there are two incoming targets.
The first is a rapidly approaching fixed-wing
aircraft, while the second, over 15 km away,
is too far away to be identified.
The commander’s decision is easy: he assigns
the target and gives permission to fire.
The remotely-based battery commander
suspects that the fixed-wing aircraft is acting
as close air support for the hostile troops.
The designation from the surveillance radar
pops up on the commander’s terminal.
He immediately assigns the target to the
operator who is aiming at the aircraft.
Despite the hostile identification from the
surveillance radar, the operator sends an IFF
query, which remains unanswered, before
he pushes the fire button. The BOLIDE
missile quickly accelerates, maintaining a
high manoeuvrability before intercepting and
hitting the aircraft, which goes down just
outside the city border.
Within five seconds, the RBS 70 NG is
reloaded and ready for action. Several
new designations have appeared on the
commanders Target Data Receiver (TDR),
including the earlier target spotted by the
operator, which turns out to be a UAV.
The commander accepts the designation of
the surveillance UAV from the radar and the
cueing aid appears on the operator’s view.
The operator now turns the firing unit
towards the cueing line and the cross
hair marks the target.
The UAV is flying low in order to take
photographs of the city, causing a cluttered
background, but the RBS 70 NG’s
unjammable capability, with the man-in-
the-loop, ensures that this is not a problem.
Another BOLIDE missile is fired under the
commander’s orders and the UAV is hit and
eliminated before it can get close enough to
start recording.
The commander knows he’ll face threats like
these again and again. With the capabilities
and operational flexibility of the RBS 70 NG
he feels confident he’ll be able to defend any
situation from all of them.
