ALUMINUM ALLOY CASTINGS

1. This specification covers permanent mold aluminum alloy (AA


356.0) castings.

NOTE: The SI (metric) values where included with inch pound


values are rounded equivalents of the inch pound values
and are for reference only.

2. No change shall be made in the quality of successive


shipments of material furnished under this specification
without first obtaining the approval of the purchaser.

3. SUPPLIER QUALIFICATION: Qualification as an approved


supplier will be based on written acceptance of this speci-
fication and such other requirements as the purchaser may
impose directly on the supplier.

6. CHECK ANALYSIS: Analyses made by the purchaser shall


conform to the requirements specified in 5. Samples for
analyses may be taken by drilling or milling one or more
castings in such a manner as to represent the average of the
material.

7. TENSILE PROPERTIES: Permanent molded, separately cast test


bars, which are thoroughly representative of the castings they
represent, shall conform to the following requirements when
tested per ASTM B 557:

8. PERMISSIBLE VARIATIONS: Per drawing.

9. FINISH:
(9.1) The castings shall be sound, clean, and commercially
free from blow holes, shrink holes, porous places, cracks, and
other injurious imperfections which will materially affect
their strength and appearance, or which indicates an inferior
quality of metal.

(9.2) Castings which show injurious defects revealed by


machining or manufacturing operations, subsequent to
provisional acceptance, may be rejected.

QUALITY ASSURANCE

10. NUMBER OF TESTS:


(10.1) The material shall be produced by manufacturing
practices and subjected to tests and inspection by the
manufacturer to assure compliance with the specified
requirements. The number of tests shall be in accordance with
the manufacturers standard quality control practices. The
purchaser reserves the right to test all material for
compliance with all requirements of this specification.
(10.2) Test bars are required only when specified on the
drawing or Purchase Order.

11. TEST REPORTS: Unless otherwise specified, test reports are


not required.

PACKING AND MARKING

12. PRODUCT IDENTIFICATION: All castings shall be stamped with


the melt number, when practicable, and with the pattern
number.

NOTE: A melt is defined as the molten product of a single


charge of a batch type furnace, or the cast product
obtained during one shift of operation of a continuous
furnace.
13. PACKING: Properly packed to prevent damage and distortion
during shipment.

14. PACKAGE MARKING: Each package or bundle shall be plainly


marked as follows: Purchase Order Number; Aluminum Alloy
Castings; P D Spec Number and Rev Letter; Gross, Tare and Net
