A Literary

Analysis of
The Great
Gatsby
By : Aliana Vazquez
Love in The Great Gatsby
The topic I chose was Love. This topic relates to The Great Gatsby because the book
surrounds the idea that love is not always fair. As the seasons change in the book we
notice that the seasons represent things and within those seasons there are symbols
that relate to the setting or relationships within the book particularly the affair of
Gatsby and Daisy.
“he stretched out his arms toward the dark water in a curious way,
and far as I was from him I could have sworn he was trembling.
Involuntarily I glanced seaward--and distinguished nothing except a
single green light, minute and far away, that might have been the
end of a dock. When I looked once more for Gatsby he had
vanished, and I was alone again in the unquiet
darkness.”(1.151-152)

The green light in the Great Gatsby represents gatsby's dreams and
hopes but it also represents his love for Daisy .The green light shines
at night which represents Daisy and Gatsby's love because their love

The green
was an affair and was kept in the dark ,The green light only shines at
night and represents Gatsby's dreams because he bought a house
across the bay from Daisy's house so this was his attempt to stay

light close to her although he knew their love was forbidden and there
were many things keeping them apart such as physical distance and
daisy being a Married woman with a child which was not common for
a married woman to have an affair in the 1920s.The color green has
also a very significant role in the book as it represents greed which
was also how gatsby was towards Daisy he wanted her and put her so
high on a pedestal,so high in fact that even he couldn't reach her
because of the way he described her as a goddess and pure.
The use of weather is used to illustrate that important events
are going to happen with the different scenarios as the weather
changes. And That weather has an effect on the meaning of the
story. There are the main seasons which are Spring,Summer,Fall
and Winter. These different seasons have many symbols within
them that have an effect on the story such as the seasons do.The
season of spring and summer in the great gatsby represented
new beginnings with Nicks arrival to west egg in the summer of
1922.The sun also represents the new beginnings and a new
change which in this scenario it is nick moving new to Gatsby.

Weather Spring-New beginnings and joyful

Summer-happiness, anger and build up tension on the hottest

day of the summer

Fall-things are dying down and coming to an end

Rain-nervousness and unpleasant feelings

Winter-all things die and come to an end

(Jordan, p.64) "...he says he's read a Chicago
paper for years on the chance of catching a
glimpse of Daisy's name.

Gatsby’s love for daisy lead him to buy a

house across the bay from her and Gatsby's
character had obsessive qualities because
of the way he make daisy seem as a
goddess and put her on a pedestal. Gatsby's

Gatsby’s Obsesión
perception on Daisy was that she was pure
and he had loved her or maybe the idea of
having her. The color white was used to
represent daisy because of her purity but in
reality it was a deception such as Gatsby's
love made him blind and he did not see the
reality of the situation as daisy was not
pure and nor what her love for Gatsby .
"I wouldn't ask too much of her," I ventured. "You
can't repeat the past."

"Can't repeat the past?" he cried incredulously.

"Why of course you can!"

He looked around him wildly, as if the past were

lurking here in the shadow of his house, just out
of reach of his hand.

Time(The past)
In chapter 5 Gatsby talks about him being able to
repeat the past and how things can be how they
once were. But the reality is that Gatsby can’t
accept the fact that things changed and are
different now but he wishes things could be how
they once were. Gatsby's sense or reality is that
he is a bit delusional thinking he can repeat the
past but it relates to how he believed that his
love with Daisy had a chance when it was doomed
since the beginning since she had child and was
in a marriage she didnt want to be in.
After all, her voice is “full of money—that was the
inexhaustible charm that rose and fell in it, the jingle of it,
the cymbals' song of it. . . . High in a white palace the
king's daughter, the golden girl. . . .” (7.106).

betrayal Through the book the concept of lying and betrayal is seen
with a lot of characters.Daisy is being cheated on with
Myrtle who is Tom's misstress but Myrtle does not love
Tom she is just interested in him for his money. Gatsby is
laer betrayed by Daisy because after everything Gatsby end
up alone when the only person he ever loved was Daisy
and she chose Tom over her “true love”. Daisy had been
raised with money and went with Tom because she knew
she would be treated right and would have what she wanted
. Daisy betray Gatsby by letting him believe she really love
him when she didn't because of Daisy really loved Gatsby
she would have gone with him and not Tom.
“I’m going to drain the pool today, Mr. Gatsby. Leaves
start falling pretty soon, and then there’s always trouble
with the pipes.” “Don’t do it to-day.” Gatsby answered.
He turned to me apologetically. “You know, old sport,
I’ve never used that pool all summer?”(153,chapter 8)

Gatsby had not used his pool all summer and when
summer came to an end and the leaves were about to fall
as the seasons changed. Gatsby did not want to drain the
pool just yet because he had hope that he was going to

Gatsby's pool use it just as he had hoped to have one last swim and
daisy were going to be together but as the season of fall
came around things changed within daisy and Gatsby's
relationship which was coming to an end. The pool had
to drained because the leaves represented a symbol that
means things were coming to an end and the leaves in the
drain of the pool would clog the pool such as daisy's
child with Tom ended a possibility of Daisy and Gatsby
being together.
The theme of the
Great Gatsby
relates to the idea
that love can be
deceiving .
A Final Word...
The next year juniors should know that the reason we read the Great Gatsby is
because it plays an important role in the way the American dream is perceived. The
Great Gatsby contains multiple symbols and by using iceberg annotations I was able
to use this to have a better understanding and go deep within the meaning of some
symbols . Using this strategy has improved my reading skills because as I was
reading the Great Gatsby I had learned how to ask questions and see the meaning
behind the within the book and noticed things such as how weather and colors can
affect the story or the mood of the story .
