DSL

DIGITAL SUBSCRIBER LINE

Introduction

 High bandwidth internet connection.

 For home and business.

 Uses copper telephone wire for data

transmission.
 Speed of transmission greater than Analog and
Digital modems.
 Data communication over existing local loops.
Categories of DSL

 ADSL (Asymmetric DSL)

 VDSL (Very high bitrate DSL)

 HDSL (High bitrate DSL)

 SDSL (Symmetric DSL)

ADSL

 Asymmetric DSL.

 High bitrate in downstream than in upstream.

 Particularly designed for residential purposes.

 Not suitable for business – High bandwidth in

both directions.

 Each system can decide on its bandwidth division.

VDSL

 Very high bitrate DSL.

 Uses coaxial fibre optics or twisted pair cable.

 Suitable for short distance.

 Downstream speed (25 – 55 Mbps)

 Upstream speed (3.2 Mbps)

HDSL

 High bitrate DSL.

 Uses repeater for longer distances.

 Increased cost.

 2 Twisted pairs (Full duplex)

SDSL

 Symmetric DSL.

 Full duplex symmetric communication

supporting upto 768 Kbps.

 Data rate same in both directions.

 Alternative to ADSL.
