Pre-Printed Notes

FREEDOM Defined.
1. The power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint.
Ex. These days, in theory, just about everyone in the country has freedom to speak.

2. The state of not being imprisoned or enslaved.

Ex. Finally, after three years of my imprisonment, I had tasted freedom again.’

3. Unrestricted use of something.

Ex. We had more or less complete freedom of using our laptop whenever and wherever we wanted.

Different Perspectives: On Freedom

1. Jean-Paul Sartre (1905-1980).

- Freedom is existence. “At this very moment… if I exist, it is because I hate existing. It is I, it is I who
pull myself from the nothingness to which I aspire: hatred and disgust for existence are just so many ways
of making me exist, of thrusting me into existence” (Sartre 1938, 145).

- “Man is nothing else, but what he makes of himself. Man is what he chooses to be.”

2. Emmanuel Kant (1724-1804): Idea of Freedom

- FREEDOM IS THE KEY TO EXPLAIN AUTONOMY OF THE WILL.
- The WILL is a kind of causality belonging to living beings so far as they are rational.
- Freedom would then be the property this causality has of being able to work independently.

3. Eddie R. Babor Ph.D. (Author /Writer)

“Don’t Fence Me In.”

(By Cole Porter)

Oh, give me land, lots of land, under starry skies above

Don't fence me in
Let me ride thru the wide-open country that I love
Don't fence me in
Let me be by myself in the evening breeze
Listen to the murmur of the cottonwood trees
Send me off forever, but I ask you please
Don't fence me in.

Just turn me loose and

Let me straddle my old saddle underneath the western skies
On my cayuse
Let me wander over yonder till I see the mountains rise
I want to ride to the ridge where the west commences
Gaze at the moon until I lose my senses
I can't look at hobbles and I can't stand fences
Don't fence me in.
