Performance Task #3 – Online Activity

Procedure for Data Gathering
Topics

 Chemical Reactions
 Limiting Reactants

Description

Create your own sandwich and then see how many sandwiches you can make with different amounts of
ingredients. Do the same with chemical reactions. See how many products you can make with different
amounts of reactants. Play a game to test your understanding of reactants, products and leftovers. Can
you get a perfect score on each level?

Sample Learning Goals

 Recognize that atoms are conserved during a chemical reaction.

 Use concrete everyday experiences (such as making sandwiches) to describe what a limiting
reactant means in chemical reactions.
 Identify the limiting reactant in a chemical reaction.
 Predict the products and leftovers after reaction, based on the quantities of reactants and ratios of
molecules in the balanced chemical equation.
 Predict the initial amounts of reactants given the amount of products and leftovers using the
concept of limiting reactant.
 Translate from symbolic (chemical formula) to molecular (pictorial) representations of matter.

Procedure:

1. Go to: https://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulation/reactants-products-and-left overs

2. Click download to get the access on the simulation given:

3. After downloading the simulation, open the file through google chrome.
4. Once you have opened it, a new window will be present. Click the icon for sandwiches.

5. Manipulate the simulation by clicking “custom” and change the number of bread, meat and cheese into
3 breads – 2 meats – 2 cheeses.

6. Change the number of ingredients in the reactant part and start with one bread – one meat and one
cheese first. Analyze how many sandwiches (products) will be formed and how many excess bread,
meat, and cheese will be left after the process.
7. Fill up the table below, as you change the number of ingredients and observe the number of products
formed and the number of excess materials available.

Data table #1:

Ingredients (Reactants) Production (after the reaction)

No. of No. of meat No. of No. of No. of No. of meat No. of

2 2 2
3 3 3

5 5 5
6 6 6
7 7 7
8 8 8

8. After completing the data for table number 1, click the icon “home” then choose the icon for
“molecules”.
9. Click the option for “make water”. Manipulate the number of reactants (H2 and O2) as given in the data
table and count for the number of products (H2O) produced and the number of excess reactants (H2 and
O2) left after the reaction.

10. Complete the table given below:

11. After completing the data for table number 2, click the option for “make ammonia”. Manipulate the
number of reactants (N2 and H2) as given in the data table. Count for the number of products (NH3)
produced and the number of excess reactants (N2 and H2) left after the reaction.
12. Complete the table given below:

Data Table #3:

13. After completing the data for table number 3, click the option for “combust methane”. Manipulate the
number of reactants (CH4 and O2) as given in the data table. Count for the number of products (CO2 and
H2O) produced and the number of excess reactants (CH4 and O2) left after the reaction.

14. Complete the table given below:
