LABORATORY EXERCISE – 1
Lab 01 : Introduction to Antenna Equipment
Title
Objective
At the end of this lab, Students will be equipped with the important types of antenna being
commonly used in the market.
Apparatus
Procedure
This is introductory lab. The students will be shown different components from the antenna
trainer which will be used for the testing in the subsequent labs.
Tasks
Student will be required to submit a report which will contain a brief description of
components being used in Brief Description Section.
Precautions
Measurements
Important Notes:
A Yagi–Uda antenna, commonly known as a Yagi antenna, is a directional antenna consisting of multiple
parallel elements in a line, usually half-wave dipoles made of metal rods. Yagi–Uda antennas consist of a
single driven element connected to the transmitter or receiver with a transmission line, and additional
"parasitic elements" which are not connected to the transmitter or receiver; a so-called reflector and one or
more directors A dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) is a radio antenna mostly used at microwave frequencies
and higher, that consists of a block of ceramic material of various shapes, the dielectric, mounted on a metal
surface, a ground plane Array antennas consist of multiple antennas working as a single antenna. Typically
they consist of arrays of identical driven elements, usually dipoles fed in phase, giving increased gain over that
of a single dipole A dipole antenna commonly consists of two identical conductive elements such as metal
wires or rods, which are usually bilaterally symmetrical. The driving current from the transmitter is applied, or
for receiving antennas the output signal to the receiver is taken, between the two halves of the antenna.
End Questions
1. What is the Technical LNC?
Ans:
The signals received by the dish antenna are transferred to a frequency converter called the LNC (Low
Noise Converter), which is placed in the focal point of the dish antenna. The LNC is also called the LNB
(Low Noise Block converter). The LNC converts the incoming signal to a lower frequency in the area
between 950 and 2150 MHz, and then amplifies the signal before it is sent to the satellite tuner.
4. What is DRO?
Ans:
A dielectric resonator is a piece of dielectric (nonconductive) material, usually ceramic, that is
designed to function as a resonator for radio waves, generally in the microwave and millimeter
wave bands. it is a radio antenna mostly used at microwave frequencies and higher, that consists of a
block of ceramic material of various shapes, the dielectric, mounted on a metal surface, a ground
plane.
