Hello again. I said hello when I saw him.
GRAMMAR
In this lesson we'll cover basic greetings for the appropriate time of day. As there are quite a
few to cover, let's jump right in.
In English we can say "hello" during any time of the day. You've probably heard this before,
and it may be similar to the "hello" in your language. When parting, you would say
"goodbye", "bye-bye", or just "bye". "Goodbye" is formal, while "bye" and "bye-bye" are more
casual.
In the morning, you would naturally say "good morning". Let's break it down by syllable:
good mor-ning. Many times, the expression is shortened to only "morning".
Any time past noon, we say "good afternoon". Let's break it down by syllable: good aft-er-
noon.
Finally, we have two evening greetings in English: "good evening" and "good night". Good
"evening" is usually used as a greeting, while "good night" is used as a parting.
Just like with "good morning", the "good" in "good evening" and "good night" can be
dropped. Some people may mumble it, and it may not be audible, but others may just not
bother to say it. An example of the contracted form would be "g'night".

Quick t ip 1
'Good afternoon' and 'good evening' are used in formal situations; therefore, it's not too
common to greet friends in this way. Staff at hotels or people in business situations may use
it as a greeting. Otherwise a simple 'hello' will do.
Quick t ip 2
A simple hey or hi will also be enough as a greeting in many casual situations. Don't be
surprised to hear these, even in business situations once you are acquainted with
colleagues.
