this material? - The earth rotates to produce day and night.
- The shadow of the moon, created by the sun, is why we see phases of the moon in our sky.
- The sun is always in the same spot in space. The earth is not.
- Like the earth rotates around the sun, the moon rotates around earth.

Ask them to make observations of what they see (earth: round, blue,
green, white, brown; moon: white, gray, has darker spots, round) and add
to chart. Then show students picture of sun. Ask, “What do we already
know about the sun?” (its bright, it gives us light, it rises and sets every
day). Add to chart. Then ask students if we can see the moon, sun, and
earth in the day or night. Record on chart. (moon- both, sun- day, earth-
both)
1:40 T/S o Student Demonstration: Ask students to go back to their seats. Call on
one volunteer to be the sun. Give them a picture of the sun and have them
stand in the middle of the carpet. Say, “Here is the sun. This is what the
sun does in space. Is the sun moving? (no).” Then ask another student to
be the earth. Have them stand next to the sun with a bit of space between
the two and hold the earth globe. Say, “What planet is this? (earth). Ask, if
the sun doesn’t move, how does earth have day and night?”. Explain that
the earth turns completely around, once every day. This creates daytime
and nighttime. Ask one more student to come up and hold the picture of
the moon. Ask the class, “Where should the moon be?” (close to earth).
Ask the earth to rotate in place and ask the moon walk slowly around the
earth as it rotates. Ask, “Can we always see a full moon?” (no).

1:45- S Have students return to their seats and take out their science notebooks.
1:50 Students will record in their science notebooks what they learned about the
moon and earth. Explain that they must use these words in their sketch and label.
Write the words large on the board and post pictures of the moon and earth next
to the words.

What will you do if… …a student struggles with the content?

I will ask scaffolding questions and help the student make observations of the moon and earth pictures to
lead them in the right direction.

What will you do if… …a student masters the content quickly?

If a student master the content quickly, I will ask them to draw a diagram of the earth, moon, and sun and
show how they move.

Meeting your students’ needs as If applicable, how does this lesson connect to the interests and cultural backgrounds of your
people and as learners students?
My students have been very interested in Earth Science since we started this unit last week. Some topics
covered today will address a few of the curious questions they have been asking in class.
If applicable, how does this lesson connect to/reflect the local community?

This lesson reflects their wonderings of what they see when they look up in the sky every night/ day.

How will you differentiate instruction for students who need additional challenge during this
lesson (enrichment)?

I will ask more challenging questions to that student, such as which is bigger, the earth or the moon? Why
do you think the moon look different sometimes? How does earth change from day to night?

How will you differentiate instruction for students who need additional language support?

I will make sure to include photos when asking questions so that they can make observations.
