CHAIN RULE
Definition : When the quantities of different kinds are connected to one other so that we
know how much of one quantity is equivalent to a given quantity of a second, etc. we can
determine how much of the lost kind is equivalent to the given quantity of first kind by
the chain rule.
Q2 => Q1 Q2
so
I. Number of person ∝ amount of work done. i.e. more person, more work
II. Number of days ∝ Amount of work i.e. more days, more work
III. Working rate ∝amount of work i.e. more working. rate, more work
IV. Efficiency of man ∝ amount of work, i.e. more efficiency of man, more work
v. Number of men = (1 / no. of days), i.e. more the men, less the no. of days required.
IMPORTANT FORMULA
(a) (Man1 * Days1 * Work rate1) / Amount of work done1 = (Man2 * Days2 * Work rate2)
/ Amount of work done2
Remember, " Man days" required per unit work is always same. If fact, Man * Days
specify the volume of job or work.
(b) If in place of men there are engines burning coal for certain number of hours, then the
above equation changes to
(No. of engine1 * Hours1 Consumption Rate1) / Amount of coal burnt2 = (No. of engine2 *
Hours2 Consumption Rate2) / Amount of coal burnt2
(No. of examiner1 * Day1 * Work Rate1) / No. of answer books checked1 = (No. of
examiner2 * Day2 * Work Rate2) / No. of answer books checked2
# This formula can be derived by combining (i), (ii), (iii), (iv) and (v) from direct
proportional and indirect proportional.
SOLVED EXAMPLES:
1. If 120 men can do a job in 100 days, in how many days will 150 men do it?
W1 = W2
Therefore, N1 * D1 = N2 * D2
N2 =80 days.
2. If 18 men working 5 hours a day for 8 days can complete a job, how many men
working 8 hours a day for 6 days will be needed?
Sol. Using,
(N1 * D1 * R1 / W) = (N2 * D2 * R2 / W)
Where N1 = 18, D1 = 8, R1 = 5
N2 = ?, D2 = 6, R2 = 8
=> 18 * 8 * 5 = N2 * 6 * 8
=> N2 = 15 men.
3. One thousand men in a fortress have provisions for 12 days. How long will the
provisions last if 200 more men join them?
D2 = 10 days.
4. If 4 men reap 40 acres in 30 days, how many acres will 18 men reap in 12 days?
Sol. N1 * D1 / W1 = N2 * D2 / W2
Where N1 = 4, D1 = 30, W1 = 40
N2 = 18, D2 = 12, W2 = ?
=> W2 = 72 acres.
5. If 2 men can build a wall 100 metres long, 3m high and 0.5m thick in 25 days, in how
many days will 20 men build a wall of 60m * 4m * 0.25m
Sol. Here the amount of job is the volume of the wall built.
since.
D2 = 6 days.
6. Fifteen men take 21 days of 8 hours each to do a work. How many days of 6 hours
each would 21 women take, if 3 women do as much work as 2 men?
Sol. Since
3 women = 2 men
D2 = 30 days
Sol.
35 days 40 days
A B. C. D
100 men started 100 men added (100 + 100 men finishwork completed
the job )
=> D1 = 10 days = BD
Therefore If 100 additional men were not engages, 10-5 = 5 days would the work have
been behind the schedule, In diagram., CD represents the time behind the schedule.
8. A contract is to be completed in 56 days and 104 men were set to work, each working
8 hours a day. After 30 days, (2 /5) of the work is finished. How many additional men
may be employed so that work may be completed on time, each man now working 9
hours per day.
x = 56 man.
9. Ten men being to work together on a job, but after some days, 4 of them leave. As a
result the job which could have been completed in 40 days is completed in 50 days. How
many days after the commencement of the work did the man leave?
400 = 4x + 300
then x = 25
10. Four lorries carrying 4 tons each move 128 tons in 8 days. In how many days will6
lorries carrying 3 tons each move 540 tons?
N1 = 4, D1 = 8, R1 = 4, W1 = 120
D2 = 30 DAYS
11. A hostel is provisional for 250 students of 35 days. After 5 days, a fresh batch of 25
student were admitted to the hostel. Again after 10 days a batch of 25 student left the
hostel. How long will the remaining provision survive?
25 student added
N1 = 250 + 25
N1 = 275
so D1 = 10
ND = N1D1 + N2D2
x = 19
12. A garrison of 3000 men has provision of 25 days when gives at the rate of 900 g per
head. At the end of day, a reinforcement arrives and if was found that now the provision
will last to days more when given at the rate of 840 g per head. What is the strength of
reinforcement?
so 3000*14*900 = (3000+x)*10*840
x = 1500
13. Six diesel engines 900 lt of diesel when each one is running for 5 hr a day. How much
diesel will be required by 9 engines, each running 8 hr. a day when 5 diesel engines of
former type consumer as much diesel engines of the letter type.
R1 = (1 / 5) and (1 / 8)
W1 = 900 litres, W2 = ?
{6 * 5 * (1 / 5) / 900} = {9 * 8 * (1 / 8) / W2)
= 1350
14. Two coal. loading machine each working 12 hours per day for 8 day handles 9000.
tonnes of coal with an efficiency of 80 % set to handle 12000 tonnes of coal in 6 days.
Find how many hours per day each should work?
N1 = 2, R1 = 12 hr/day
N2 = 3, R2 =?
E1 = (90/100)W1 = 9000
E2 = (80/100)W2 = 12000
R2 = 16 hr/day. Ans
15. 'A' can do a piece of work in (5 /2) days which 'B' can do in (10 / 3) days. If A's
wages are 50 per week and B's wages are 42.50 per week. What 'A' would have charged
for doing a piece of work for which B received Rs. 340.
