Reflection
This was a lesson that I feel I learned a lot from in terms of how important it is to be clear, to
engage students, and how I envision myself as a teacher. I didn’t necessarily have a “hook” per
se, but I reminded students about the lesson with Sra. Sundset in which they planted a mystery
object and they really wanted to plant their own seeds. The excitement I saw when I told them I
would giving them this opportunity really made me happy and made me relax a little as I was
feeling pretty nervous in the beginning. Because I would be giving a demonstration on how to
plant the seeds in Spanish I wanted to ensure they understood as well as they could and thus, I
acted out each step deliberately and I feel this made my instructions clear regardless of whether
they understood what I was saying or not. However, I’d like to believe they recognized at least
some of the spring vocabulary they have been learning.
Though this is the second lesson I have given the students, this was the first time I saw myself as a
teacher. I can actually begin to envision doing this regularly, though I know I have a long way to
go in terms of gaining confidence and classroom management. I know today was relatively easy
as the AM students, for the most part, are good at listening to instruction. There was one student
who was acting up and it took a lot of patience on my part to have him listen to me and not speak
out of turn constantly. In the end, Sra. Sundset took him away to have a discussion about his
behavior, but I do wonder what I would have done if I was alone in that classroom.
So far, I feel that I need to continue to build relationships and get up in front of them more and
recognize that I, too, am a teacher, like Sra. Sundset. I recognize that this comes with time but I
think by the end of this experience, I will have gained enough confidence in my own ability and
thus, be able to project myself as teacher and guide for these children. I really want for them to
learn as much from me as I learn more from and about them.
